Look-Up is an augmented reality shoot-em-up for iPhone (not iPad or iPod) in a Space Invaders style. And it’s fun.

Swarms of 1950s-style flying saucers fly down at you from the sky – you point your phone back at them and hit the fire button. Zappity zap zap. I tried it this morning in my office in flooding-with-rain Wiltshire, but I suspect it would be more exciting to play when you’re outdoors in the sun, like the guys in this demo video:

Now you get the idea. On screen, you have a sight that you line up with the bad guys. There are two buttons – one to fire, another to pick up power-ups, drop bombs, and so on.

There are several different play modes, but the most fun is definitely the one where you pull in more team members and play together.

The AR isn’t perfect. Sometimes, flying saucers don’t move at all predictably and seem follow your phone’s movements instead of making their own. Aiming can be tricky too – the instructions recommend you move slowly, but that’s hard when the bad guys are moving fast and the future of humanity is at stake.

But that said, there’s easily a dollar’s worth of fun to be had with this game. Just don’t get so excited that you drop your iPhone.
