Apple Censoring Discussion Forums Ref. Consumer Reports

Apple has started to delete threads full of comments about the Consumer Reports article bashing the iPhone 4 antenna from its support forums.

Apple’s Discussion Forum censors went into overdrive today in what appears to be an attempt by Apple to squash all references to the Consumer Reports statement that it “can’t recommend” the iPhone 4 until the antenna issues are fixed, issues that their labs and I’ve independently confirmed on my own iPhone 4.

This isn’t the first time that Apple has had sour grapes about topics posted to their support forums. They have been known to regularly delete discussions about hardware or software flaws that Apple wasn’t ready to talk about. I’ve heard and read about Apple’s dreadful censoring habit for years when there were issues about iMacs, Powerbooks, and Mac OS X Leopard. It wasn’t until today that I saw a real example of Apple’s censorship happening to something that interested me.

I checked the forum postings that were in earlier reports and I wasn’t able to access them and received this error: “Error: you do not have permission to view the requested forum or category.” I searched the forums and found two live threads (at press time) here and here. Ironically, the first thread has disappeared only to be replaced by the error message and so far the second thread is still live, but I’m sure that won’t last very long.

Unfortunately for Apple, but luckily for us is that the Internet has a lot of wide open spaces that can be used to discuss the antenna issue that Apple does not want to admit to — so go ahead voice your comments good or bad here on Cult of Mac.

Love my iPhone 4 so far! Got the bumper when I purchased it, Apple rep put it on for me before we even had it set up. Unable to reproduce any drop in signal when simulating the “death grip” for friends or coworkers. Apple tech support is A++++++ from helping transfer contacts, helping setup transferring/syncing data from third party email/calendar/address books, help with testing notification settings, help with questions related to transferring photos. Anything that is puzzling or difficult can be quickly addressed with Apple tech support at the store, or on the Apple website with a prompt phone call with a live person. Amazingly quick service for getting up to speed with a highly functional device. Would totally recommend Apple for anyone, tons better than any previous phone experience. Tested Facetime with their 888-facetime number, all working great!

  • Crusader

haha Apple has become 1984. It’s almost too much to believe!

  • gdylan

Apple might have great tech support but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to hook s phone up to s computer to sync files lol. Anyways apple just needs to stick to making computers not phones, the released the phone to s crappy carrier to support their crappy phone so I guess its a perfect match. And the antenna problem is s huge issue, some ppl don’t want to have to hold their phone differently or buy a apple bumper for 30 dollars to be able to use the phone for what it is meant for. Everyone should file a class action suit against apple or return the phone to show apple that they have a real problem to address, Steve jobs is arrogant that until something happens about the problem legally they ain’t do anything to address them selves, or you could just buy and Android phone and not have any of those problems

  • Cody

@gdylan…If we all just sued everyone when we didn’t like something, then I’d sue your ass for such terrible grammar and repeatedly hitting the “s” when you meant to hit “a” on your keyboard. You can’t just be “sue-happy”. That’s what is wrong with everyone these days. If you don’t like the damn phone, then bring it back and get something else.

  • Jeff

Apple is certainly within its rights to censor their own forums. However, it speaks to the kind of company they are to do so.

    Just fix the problem.

  • Jeremy

Maybe Apple should put this “faulty” antenna into all their iphones. I don’t think I have dropped a call on the new iphone yet. I am in a different city most days of the week, and even in Los Angeles (two days ago) and NYC last week, I didn’t have one dropped call. It used to be that you couldn’t get in a cab from Soho to the park without dropping every 15 seconds, now I have no problems. All hail the faulty antenna

  • porkchop1234

I wish I could sue isheep fandroids and trolls out of existence. gdylan you shouldn’t drink 12 beers then come on the net and start posting incoherent dribble on blogs. You come across as pretty stupid.

Mr David Martin please keep up the good work its refreshing to see a brutally honest approach to the obvious problems the new phone is causing some of its users. Hopefully if enough is written about this glaring problem Apple will be forced to do something about it.

  • The Doctor

um how is this new? Apple has long censored what it considers to be misinformation from it’s tech support forms. Oh buy a bumper and move on.

  • porkchop1234

No misinformation involved the new iPhone has problems with signal reception due to a design flaw in its antenna. You can’t refute the Consumer Report people they’re neutral as far as the mobile business is concerned. They couldn’t care less who made the phone or who sells more in a quarter they only care about consumer satisfaction. They proved there’s a problem no ands ifs or buts. Learn to live with the truth.

  • Peter Too

You know what might be fun, dear ol’ Cult o’ Mac… if you imposed some sort of “one iPhone 4 story a day” rule. Not saying you shouldn’t trawl the interwebs for every piece of dirt you can dig up and use as ammunition in this crusade you’re on. You should… that’s part one of good journalism.

Part two however is putting all that dirt into one coherent story.

Right now you’re just harping on and on and on and on… it’s boring as zune.

  • Jaime R

Oh, you have independently confirmed it. That’s great. I mean, you are such a credible authority, certainly at the level of Consumer Reports or above.

Also, you know what? The white iPhone 4 hasn’t been released due to manufacturing problems, and I have independently confirmed it. You are welcome.

  • halberto

Apple’s online discussion forums are for support purposes. It makes sense that they’d delete threads whose main purpose is just to talk crap about a product.

    Dontcha think?

  • Ted

@porkchop1234 – but isn’t it interesting that Consumer Reports rates the iPhone 4 as their best smartphone :)

People need to learn that if you have a case, you won’t have the antenna issue, and that the upcoming software update will fix most of the remaining phones that don’t have cases.

So hang tight, Apple always does the right thing for customers.

  • Zell127

Oh my god an independent group found that there is a problem with the new iPhone 4… Because everything you read on the Internet is real right? And no one would lie to you to create gossip??? Pffft a couple months from now we are going to find out all these “independent” consumer reporters are actually owned by a subsidiary of google ;) if you don’t like the iPhone don’t buy it… Seems pretty straight forward to me..

  • TechnoHistorian

Consumer Reports has been known to be wrong, spectacularly wrong, in the past. I’ve just received my long-awaited iPhone 4 and even while all but smothering the so-called death grip zone, I cannot diminish the phones 3G capability. I do notice that most of the antenna detractors cite Consumer Reports or their “better” Android phones or their hostility to Apple, while most of those who are say they are getting great signals through the external antenna actually own and use the phone! Adding to the dis-credability of the CS report is that, which recommending against buying the iPhone 4, they rate it as the best smart phone on the market! Hmmmmm.

Decisin taken, Android, here I come.

I wont’t buy an expensive phone from a company with this policy.

  • ggore

Yes there’s a real problem, but it can be fixed, either with a horrifically expensive Bumper or a $.00002 piece of Scotch Tape. Or any other of hundreds of soon-to-be-available cases & covers of hundreds of different types of materials. The after-market folks are gonna make a killing out of this. I am quite happy with my 1 year old 3Gs, so I will be gladly skipping this update, waiting until next year when my 2-year contract is up to see what Apple comes up with.

  • Peter Too

I’ve been utterly unable to recreate this death grip scenario. I’ve tried with moist hands, dry hands, tinfoil and even a paper clip.

Wi-fi was spot on through-out and the 3G signal bars didn’t move more than they usually do (I live in a kind of patchy area, so it usually moves up and down a notch anyway – does for all phones).

Not saying there isn’t something to it. Just that it doesn’t seem to affect every phone.

  • MarkByrn

How is that “Cult of Mac” is ignorant of Apple’s iron fist policies with respect to their forums? Not only have I had my posts deleted but unless you ask a noobish technical question that an Apple fanboy can readily answer, you’ll get no help and/or they’ll tell you to post the problem to Apple’s feedback page.

By the way, to the person who said he couldn’t reproduce the problem because he purchased a bumper, DOH! If you bothered to read the Consumer Reports article, it clearly noted that covering the antenna would will solve the problem and their recommendation is not to buy the iPhone 4 until Apple provides a FREE fix. You paid for the fix.

    …Decisin taken, Android, here I come…

That’s like saying you’re going to buy a Ford Focus to avoid problems with the Toyota Camry.

  • Matthijs Vermeer

My mom always said that it’s not bad if I did something wrong (since problems can be solved), but it is bad to lie about it. Maybe Apple should listen to my mom, because I think everybody would be happy if Apple just said they made a mistake and they are going to fix it as soon as possible. Rather that, than lie that it’s a software-related problem (while it’s proven it isn’t) or not a problem at all and shut the people up that claim otherwise.

With xbox 360 I don’t know anyone with one of the first two generations who hasn’t returned it for a red ring of death issue. A manufacturing fault and a basic design issue withwhere they placed the GPU meant it was inevitable most of these unit would fail under normal use eventually. Xbox still seems to be selling well though. iPhone will be the same.
I do think iphone4 will be Apples windows vista. Though to be honest it was Vista that got me on linux and then OS X because the performance was zoo poor.

  • UncleSamsPuppet

Recently I was due for a phone upgrade and highly considered the iPhone 4. I ended up going with an Android due to all the complaints. If they’ve fixed the problem in 2 years, I might consider them again, but definitely will not without them owning up to mistakes.

  • http://shaniacimac.blogspot.com Shane

Apple discussion boards have done this for years. They have devoted stormtroopers on there who will edit or delete your posts in a flat second, if they deem the posts unflattering to their products.

What’s unfortunate is that I’ve had several negative things to write in those forums, usually about hardware. My Powerbook’s lower memory slot went out and I never got it fixed because mine wasn’t in the “range of serials” that Apple deemed to be the problem; no one told my Powerbook that. My current Airport Extreme has to be reset usually once each day…again, Apple’s response to me is to make an appointment and bring it in to the Genius Bar (not sure how they are going to replicate my issue there, since it’s random). If you Google it, however, you’ll see that it’s a common problem, and people get inconsistent help (some get products replaced straightaway while others don’t).

Same sort of censoring happened when Apple decided to remove pdf manuals and hardcopy manuals from Logic Studio and replace them with the cumbersome Apple Help system. Apple finally relented and quietly brought back the pdf files after all the complaints. But they never acknowledged the complaints.

I think Apple would do well to have a revamped hardware testing division: A group of folks to test a product for six months thoroughly, before Apple releases it. They’ve always relied on users and developers to QC their software just before and right after release, but it’s a mistake to use that model on hardware. There are certain things in hardware that simply can’t be fixed after the genie is out of the bottle. I’m afraid what happens is that users end up being guinea pigs for the hardware a lot of the time; Apple simply (quietly) fixes the issues discovered in the next iteration, but the original buyers are left out in the cold.

Haven’t had a cell phone yet that didn’t have problems where I live, on Unicel (now Verizon) or AT&T. My iPhone 4 seems better than my 3G was out here, and I can’t replicate the problem with the antenna — so few bars, but no drop. If it weren’t for CR, I’d completely believe Apple on the software thing, since it’s consistent with what I say. But CR isn’t infallible, either, though I highly respect them. If CR is accurate, then Apple needs to step up and apologize and recall, and not become That Company; but if CR isn’t right, or if Apple simply doesn’t believe them due to their own tests (they have pretty good engineers, too, you know), then why should they apologize or recall? (I know, I know, to avoid the bad PR.)

  • Mainer

I meant “with what I see”, not “with what I say”. Sheesh. And I proofread that, too.

  • Mike

“Apple has started to delete threads full of comments …”

Your comment shows you do not understand what those forums are there for. They are there to let users ask technical questions of other users who hopefully have answers. Apple Discussions are there for that purpose alone, not to make ‘comments’, whinge, moan, rant, discuss policy, suggest improvements, praise or whatever.

In sticking to that single purpose the forums you seek to rubbish with your conspiracy theory actually provide one of the best places on the web to get help with Apple products.

You might understand better if you read this thread:

Apple sucks. You people are all fanboys who will believe anything Steve Jobs tells you. The iphone is a expensive piece of crap.

Just posted a question on the iPad forum, asking for a DVD-player for the iPad. As there is no iTunes video, Netflix, Hulu, etc here in Europe, that would be really useful. Five minutes later, the post was gone without a trace, deleted by Big Brother and his Ministry of Truth.
