Fancy protecting your iPhone with a hand-crafted aluminum case that’s worth at least twice what you paid for the handset? Then you may be interested in SQUAIR’s Slit iPhone 7 case, a fancy new case that reflects the “stoic” sensibilities of its Japanese creators.

At $1,700 (plus tax), that’s a whole lot of stoicism.

“We have two reasons why SQUAIR has such a high price point,” team member Asako, who is in charge of international sale for SQUAIR, told Cult of Mac. “First, we used extra super duralumin A7075, which is normally used for aircraft body [due to its] super-light but super-hard [properties]. This material is famous for use in the Japanese historical aircraft, ‘zero-sen,’ which was used during WWII. Secondly, the [manufacturing] process took a very long time, since we sharpen [each] case one-by-one.”

Asoko said the case’s target market is people in their early 40s to mid-50s, living in metropolitan cities.

“Our customers might appreciate the authentic beauty and simplicity since they’ve seen a lot of products through their life experience,” Asoko said. “Also they might [be successful] in their business, so can afford to spend money on possessions.”

While it certainly costs a lot more than most run-of-the-mill iPhone cases, The Slit isn’t close to the most expensive iPhone accessory you can get — if flaunting your cash is a “must” for you.

As we’ve noted before, some gold-plating companies offer options that go all the way up to $130,000. For that price, you’ll get a case that protects your iPhone with 4,000 individual, hand-set diamonds.

If you want to check out SQUAIR’s Slit iPhone 7 case, you can do so at luxury retailers like Barneys in New York, Colette in Paris, and Isetan and Restir in Japan. Or you can get an iPhone 6 version from Amazon.
