MyWi Brings Data Tethering to Jailbroken iPhones

MyWi Brings Data Tethering to Jailbroken iPhonesIf you took the plunge on the Spirit jailbreak over the weekend, no need to wait for AT&T to fulfill their long ignored promise to bring data tethering to the iPhone in the United States: the MyWi App will turn your iPhone into a wireless 3G modem right now.

The app costs $10 on jailbroken iPhones and it looks pretty simple: you just launch the MyWi app, flip the “WiFi Tethering” switch to “On” and then you can connect any WiFi-capable device to your iPhone.

This would be a great way to make your iPad WiFi 3G capable while saving yourself $130 bucks. If you want to try MyWi, you can grab it now through Cydia.

Any issues with at&t visual voicemail? I wouldn’t want to run into the same problems again… thnx

I have tried MyWi and it works exactly as described… Much better than PDANet and Tidal Software Tether, even though 5 bucks more, you can actually share the connection, as opposed to just connect using cable or bluetooth.

    Really recommended!!!!

    Monica,

I’m familiar with the issues your referring to, which have to do with hacked carrier files. I’ve been using MyWi for about 5 months, and there are no issues with Visual VoiceMail, YouTube, etc., etc. The developer has done a great job with this app. I purchased mine through RockYourPhone and there is a 10 day trial period (I assume it’s the same through Cydia) so I’d say give it a try and see how it works for you.

I took the plunge earlier today and did a jailbreak of my 3GS, downloaded this app, etc., and all I got was a constantly crashing MyWi app — start the app, down it goes, start the app, down it goes. And so on.

Have never done a jailbreak of my iPhone in the 3 years I’ve been using an iPhone, and the whole user experience with Cydia etc. is an unpolished, busy, ugly mess sorely in need of some non-engineer designers.

I am right now in the process of un-jailbreaking the phone and doing a full restore. I’d like to be able to tether but not at the price of the iPhone’s stability and smooth functioning. Just posting to warn users that while this may work for some people, YMMV.

@bb…apparentely you did something wrong…cuz I as there are some issues now and then…I have never seen any at all like you are suggesting…

but I haven’t used the Spirit jailbreak…but with Blackra1n there was never an issue

PDANet works fine and it’s free though MiWi does work as advertised.

  • TG

I used it a lot and it rocks… one thing though… THIS EATS YOUR BATTERIES ALIVE… So this is not a real alternative for the iPad 3G… unless you can charge in the meanwhile

I have to say I have read extensively about “Jail-breaking & Unlocking” and this forum has seemed the most clean and informative; maybe only so as a result of having my mind f*d with by all the other sites. Nevertheless, there are apparently 4-5 major development teams even if some use others materials some of which unreliable as they may seem, are out their and with no website to give clear, precise guidance at how to tether functionally without trial and error. Unfortunately, MyWi, costs money. Though it may not be a lot, but for one who believes that anything software related can come free, some is more than none. If you would like to tether without frustration using a junior developers app, pulling your hair, waiting the 20min’s every-time you break down and restore your newly acquired extremity; than I have to say ” Stop Your Search, Choose MyWi”

I used http://www.jailbreakme.com through my safari and it seems to have worked great. The only problem is the mywi app when opened will search for a licesne and never starts up. Well it has a couple times. Does anyone have any info for me? Thanks!
