The weekend’s already half way over but, fear not, Cult of Mac is here to fill you in on the week’s best apps.

In addition to great gadget-hunting and photo sharing apps, we’ve picked out some great games from the past seven days. Check out our suggestions below. You won’t regret it!

Boomerang

A rival of sorts to Apple’s new Live Photos feature for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Instagram’s Boomerang app allows users to create one-second videos of everyday moments. It works by taking a quick burst of photos, which it then stitches together to form a mini-video that you can play forwards or backwards. (Hence the name Boomerang!)

What’s the advantage over Live Photos? Well, for one thing it’s available whether or not you have Apple’s latest smartphone. More importantly, it’s designed for sharing via social media, regardless of the device your friends are using. Certainly worth a download!

Guitar Hero Live

I’ll admit that I was torn about whether to include Guitar Hero Live in this week’s roundup. On the one hand, I’m an enormous Guitar Hero fan, so it’s great to see it make a reappearance on iOS. For those that have never played it on mobile before, it works surprisingly well, and the new “live” video effect makes it even more engaging than previous versions.

The downside of the game is the price point. It’s a free download, but the demo version only gives you two trial songs. To get the full version, you’ll have to shell out for in-app purchases, which will cost you a whopping $49.99. While I’m all for premium games on iOS (and once the songs are bought, you won’t be asked to shell out for more micro-payments), this is certainly a bit steep.

But it’s a fun, fun game. You can decide which side of the fence to come down on.

Available for: iPhone, iPad
Cost: Free (with expensive in-app purchases)

Legacy of Dawn: Herald of Oblivion

I’m a Warhammer 40,000 fan, but I’m the first to admit that the franchise has given us a few less-than-stellar games over the years. Fortunately Herald of Oblivion is great — a digital gamebook in which you play a member of the Imperial Fist Space Marines, trapped on a space hulk called Herald of Oblivion as the only surviving member of your squad.

If you’ve played any previous Tin Man Games gamebooks, the format won’t be a surprise to you. But the combat is great, the plot is compelling, and… hey, it’s a new Warhammer 40,000 game on iOS. What more do you want from me?

Available for: iPhone, iPad
Cost: $5.99

Evel Knievel — The Official App

A mobile simulator of some of the craziest daredevil stunts in history, Evel Knievel is a fun recreation of 27 of Knievel’s most iconic jumps from nine different historic locations, including Las Vegas, Ontario, and Chicago.

Completing jumps earns cash to buy new motorbikes and classic outfits, but it’s the desire to beat yourself and top the leaderboard that’ll keep you playing. Great physics engine, too.

Cost: $1.99

PepFeed

There are plenty of shopping aggregation services online, but PepFeed is trying to improve on the model — giving tech fans access to the best deals on 10,000 different electronic devices by asking them to simply snap a picture of the price tag with product model name. The app will then automatically display where you can buy said device at the lowest price.

On top of this, PepFeed also acts as a curation service for the best videos and online content about each device, so that you can be well and truly informed when you make your choice. Not a groundbreaking app, perhaps, but definitely one that promises to save you time.
