The iPhone may not yet sport an ultra-tough sapphire display, but don’t think Apple’s handsets are by any means delicate.

A 74-year-old Texas businessman recently expressed his amazement after his iPhone fell 9,300 feet during a flight from Houston — and miraculously survived.

Ben Wilson and a pilot were flying in a six-seater, single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza when a pressure change caused the passenger door to open slightly.

“The pressure popped and a newspaper flew out but I didn’t see the phone go,” Wilson told NBC News. “After we got back I looked for it on the floor [of the plane] and in my briefcase but couldn’t find it.”

Sure that his iPhone had expired, Wilson nonetheless decided to try out the Find My iPhone function — only to discover that it still showed up around 80 kilometers from where Wilson lived.

With an employee, he followed the signal and found the iPhone in a field. Other than a few scratches, it was apparently in perfect working order.

“The screen was intact, the phone still made calls and all other features worked as usual,” NBC News reported. “Wilson had encased the iPhone in a protective case with an external battery pack, which was the only piece that snapped off in the fall and couldn’t be found.”

From Samsung’s cheap clones to an unexpected voyage to the bottom of the ocean, is there nothing the iPhone can’t survive?
