Screaming Fast New MacBook Pros and Mac Pro Desktops Next Week? [UPDATE: Maybe No MacBooks]

UPDATE: Seth at 9to5Mac is now backtracking. While he says he’s received multiple tips that Mac Pros will be updated, he thinks the MacBook Pros tip might have been fake. “Shame on us,” he says.

Our friend Seth Weintraub at 9to5Mac thinks MacBooks and Mac Pros will be updated within a week. Seth received a tip that Apple’s pro desktop and portable line are being refreshed in the next few days — maybe as early as tomorrow, but more likely next Tuesday.

A refresh of the Mac Pros is already widely-rumored. The desktops are expected to be refreshed next week with the Intel Core i7-980x, a six-core screamer. But maybe new MacBooks are in line also? The new MacBook Pros will get Intel i5 and i7 processors, just like the current line of higher-end iMacs. The basic 13-inch MacBook Pro will have an Intel i5 processor, while the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBooks will have quad-core i7 processors.

If true, these machines will be screamers.

In February, MacRumors readers claimed to have found a GeekBench benchmark from a Core-i7  M620 MacBook Pro running an unreleased version of Mac OS 10.6.2. Current MacBook Pros score in the 3700-4000 range. However, this result is to be taken with a very large pinch of salt: forum readers say they’ve been planting fakes.

    hmm.. Now I’m thinking I should have waited and not dropped 2k on my MacBook Pro less then 6 months ago! Ahh well. Let’s hope these are the first of many :-)

    I won’t believe it until I’ve purchased it, taken it home and booted it up, installed new software, composed a short novel on it, spilled some coffee on the keyboard, dropped it a few times, upgraded the memory and watched so many HD movies on it that I wore out the battery and had to replace it at great cost and out of warranty. Even then I’ll still have that nagging doubt in the back of my mind.

    Woohoo I’m so excited to get my new MacBook pro… I’m running on a three-year-old hp now, and trying to do video editing is SLOW! I will believe these rumors when I see them… If all websites do is say “next Tuesday the new MacBook pro is gonna come out”, one day they will be right.

    does anyone know if they are planning on upgrading the macbook air as well? i already have the latest macbook but would like an air for lighter travelling, but 2gb ram wont cut it for me.

    SeanNY – (very funny post btw) I’m with you 100%….there have been so many fake posts claiming that Macbook pro will be released today that make any predictions impossible to believe. I really hate the people who posted “Macbook pro is released today!!! over a month ago.

    I have lost so much hope that I now believe that apple will never ever EVER release an update for macbook pro and that the sun will burn out before they do.

    In fact I would go far as to say that I now believe that apple will stop manufacturing macbook pro’s, laptops and computers all together and the company will fall into oblivion such that the only time people will refer to the word Apple is when they are talking about Malus Domestica.

    I heard MacBooks will be updated next week – but only one of them. Customers will have to fight for it. The losers get Dells.

    I was a best buy last night looking at cameras and saw an Apple rep next to the ” store within a store”. Got to talking with him and all but promised me Apple will NOT be upgrading the MacBook line until after iPad is relesed. I want them too, like everyone else but just relaying what I was told.

    On the other hand.. Who f-n really knows…

    Price will remain the same until new MBP arrives. There is no reason for Apple to lower it.
