Pippin was a good choice for ‘biggest flop,’ but that mouse? Could you even buy that separately? The G4 cube was a marvel of design that still commands a premium price on e-bay. It was overpriced and underpowered at the time, we got a PowerMac G4 instead, but still always wanted one. We got a Studio Display monitor for it that has been just wonderful through the years (we got the smaller one–that larger one was a monstrosity). We passed on the Mac TV too, got a Performa 638 CDV at Circuit City instead. It was probably the last 680X0 (LC) Mac made, but it had a 350M HD and a video card along with it’s CD drive, so it could do everything the Mac TV could, but in the form of a Quadra. Wonderful machine!
“How quickly we forget Apple’s biggest flops.”
But how much Cult wants us to remember them. What purpose is served by totaling up and flogging the early attempts that failed? Gotta make mistakes in order to have successes.
The Pippin wasn’t really marketed by Apple under the Apple name, so I think it was more of an experiment. Notice how there isn’t an Apple Logo on the product. It was licensed to Bandai and Katz Media and mfg by Mitsubishi. Apple didn’t spend any money trying to market it.
