Foxconn’s new $2.6 billion factory dedicated to building displays exclusively for Apple will supply OLED panels for future iPhones and wearables, according to a report from leading Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun.
Long-time Apple manufacturer Foxconn is supposedly working with touch panel company InnoLux to put together an ecosystem, allowing it to produce sixth-gen low temperature poly-silicon films, aimed at entering mass production in 2016.
According to the newspaper’s source, these OLED displays are designed to be used for both smartphones and wearables — suggesting that Apple may be considering using (or has decided to use) OLED panels for future iPhones, rather than the LCD displays used in all models up until now.
If true, the rumor also raises questions about what this could mean for LG, which currently supplies the panels for the Apple Watch.
We’ll have to wait to find out, although one thing’s for sure: between its new Apple-centric factory and discussions about taking over Apple’s sapphire production, Foxconn’s cozying up to Cupertino to a greater degree than ever.
