New Emulator Lets You Play Classic Game Boy On Your iPhone

For iOS users it seems that 2014 is something of a golden age for classic Nintendo gaming.

That’s because over the past few weeks we’ve seen not one, not two, but three separate emulators bringing classic NES and Game Boy action to iOS.

First up was webNES, an NES emulator for mobile devices. Next came GBA4iOS, which let iOS 7 users play a variety of Game Boy titles without having to jailbreak.

Now we also have Ben Midi’s Gameboy to round out the collection. Similar to webNES, Gameboy runs entirely inside your mobile Safari browser which means that — unlike GBA4iOS — there’s no need to download any software, roll back your iPhone date, or anything similar. Instead, just select one of the 13 available Game Boy games, slap a Vanilla Ice cassette into your tape deck, and pretend like it’s 1990 all over again.

Games currently available include:

  • Mario Land
  • Tetris
  • Dr. Mario
  • Bomberman
  • Kirby’s Dream Land
  • Kirby XXL
  • Space Invaders
  • Motocross Maniacs
  • Bomb Jack
  • Boxxle 2
  • Castelian
  • Centipede
  • Stopwatch

Since this web emulator appears to be hosting to providing access to genuine Game Boy games, of course, it seems likely that Nintendo’s lawyers might jump on this faster than Mario leaping on a Goomba.

But until that happens this is a great way to recall the simpler days when handheld devices ran out of batteries after what seemed like just a couple of hours.
