AutoStitch Panorama 2.0 Gives The iPhone The Megapixels Of A Pro Camera

People think Texans own the whole “bigger-is-better” thing. But just look at the size of Canada — yeah, Canadians know a thing or two about big. No surprise then, that it’s a gang from Canada who are trying to squeeze billboard-sized images from the iPhone’s wee 3mp sensor.

Cloudburst‘s AutoStitch Panorama is a photo-collage app that, prior to the update, wasn’t able to produce images any larger than the standard iPhone camera image size. But with the update, a 3GS can now stitch up to 10 separate images together to form a single, massive 20mp image (unfortunately, 3G and Original users are capped at five-megapixel images).

To compare, that’s just one megapixel shy of the $6000 Canon 1Ds Mk 3‘s pro-level 21-megapixel output; pretty impressive, especially considering the app is just $3 (and at the time of this post, AutoStitch Panorama is on sale for $2).

Of course, megapixels aren’t as important as the quality of the lens or the sensor — but the ability to produce large, high-detail images on the iPhone 3GS should make AutoStitch Panorama a must-have for every iPhone photog out there. Look for a CoM review soon.

Was wondering when we’d see something like this, kinda cute.

If you can figure out a way of securing your iPhone to something like a Manfrotto Gear Head (which has very sensitive 3-way head tuning), you could do probably some nice accurate mosaics.

Interesting find Eli. Given that people are creating full size art works with Brushes, and the high number of purposeless apps available this is a simple tool for adding value and flexibility to the camera feature. I don’t think its creators would pretend otherwise.
Now, when do we get 5MP or more?
