Apple just rolled out a new software update for the Apple TV that adds new channels for HBO GO and WatchESPN, as well as Sky News, Crunchyroll, and Qello. The iOS 5.3 release is compatible with both the second- and third-generation Apple TVs, and is available to download now.

This is the first time HBO GO and WatchESPN subscribers have been able to enjoy this content directly on their Apple TV, and Apple’s Eddy Cue believes both channels will be “huge hits” with those who own the $99 set-top box.

“HBO GO and WatchESPN are some of the most popular iOS apps and are sure to be huge hits on Apple TV,” Cue said in a press release today. “We continue to offer Apple TV users great new programming options, combined with access to all of the incredible content they can purchase from the iTunes Store.”

HBO GO subscribers will be able to watch original HBO programming, hit movies, sports, documentaries, comedy specials, and more; while those with WatchESPN can enjoy live sports on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 and ESPN Buzzer Beater/Goal Line.

The update also adds channels for Sky News, Crunchyroll, and Qello, which offer live news, sports, and current TV programming.

You can download the iOS 5.3 update to your Apple TV now by visiting the Software Update section inside the settings menu.
