Gallery: 10 Visions of Apple-Inspired Dystopia

This next section has a more graphic design orientation, with artists taking Apple on in the very realm where the company’s messaging and branding live.

The artist behind the Death Note app says, “In an age where you’re more likely to see kids typing on their iPods and iPhones, Death Notes need an update. So there’s an app for that.” It’s perhaps less of a statement about Apple than it is about modern youth culture in general, but it’s definitely got a dark ring to it.

These next three examples are simply in-your-face critical of the influence of Apple product. It’s not especially artistic or creative, but the artist who created the iPhone Signature banner above minces no words.

i_wont_conform.jpg

iPhone and iPod advertising is widely parodied in both critical and sycophantic manners. The artist behind “i Won’t Conform” says, “It’s quite depressing having issues with Apple when the Mac [is] the best design tool for Graphic Design. Still, I Won’t Conform.”

Finally, we leave you with an expression of pure malcontent. The piece is called iPhone: Ultimate Antisocialism and the artist is vague about the motivations behind it. Is it jealousy, is it bald-faced meanness, or is it possibly an inspired critique on the disassociation from the real world and real communication that the iPhone may have unleashed?

The ‘Digital Native’ piece is outstanding, and I wonder how you found it?

I read the NYT article that you linked as well. I imagine the patent has something to do with free hardware. You get the ‘thing’ for free, but must respond to ads. It’s a choice that a consumer would make, so I can’t view Apple as evil because of it.
