Foxconn Will Build Amazon’s Kindle Tablet Alongside iPad 3 [Rumor]

Foxconn Electronics currently assembles a whole host of Apple gear, and apparently persuaded the Cupertino company recently to make it the sole producer of a third iPad expected to launch later this year. It seems that’s not enough for the China-based manufacturer, however. It has no intention of being as loyal to Apple in return. According to industry sources, it will also produce what could be one of the iPad’s biggest rivals: an Amazon Kindle tablet.

DigiTimes reports that Foxconn has secured orders for a 10.1-inch Amazon Android-powered tablet which is set to begin shipping in 2012. The device will reportedly be Amazon’s second tablet, with Quanta Computer having already begun shipping the first — a smaller, 7-inch device set to launch later this year.

Foxonn will also produce 12 million Kindle e-readers, according to DigiTimes:

In addition to the new tablet PC orders, Foxconn currently is also likely to produce 12 million units of Kindles for Amazon, and 38-40 million units of iPads as well as 80-85 million iPhones for Apple a year, the sources indicated.

DigiTimes’ sources contradict a recent Wall Street Journal report which claims a 9-inch Amazon tablet is set to compete with Apple’s iPad this October. However, this could be the smaller device currently being built be Quanta Computer.
