MacBook Air Dangling By A Single Balloon Doesn’t Really (But Is Still Cool)

By

post-80012-image-96041971bbf1fd442ba2ebce2b9b5431-jpg

Go down to your local Apple Store and you might just see this wonderful display for the new MacBook Air. Channeling Pixar’s Up, the display features a single helium balloon dangling aloft an 11-inch MacBook Air.

All is not as it seems, of course: nearly invisible fishing wire is being employed to create the illusion. The Air’s light, of course, but not so light that it can be lifted by a child’s balloon.

Still, this calls for an experiment: I wonder who out there is brave enough to figure out how many balloons are needed to send an Air into the stratosphere and willing to back up their math by lending their notebook and its iSight camera to the cause?

The BookArc Allows You To Dock Your MacBook Air

By

bookarc

Got a new MacBook Air and looking for an accessible docking solution for when you want to work on a larger monitor at your desk?

The BookArc is an attractive docking solution for the Air made from heavy gauge steel with a built-in wire management system that neatly integrates the cables that need to plug into both sides of the Air.

You’ll need to supply your own display, mouse and keyboard, but once that’s done, turning your Air into a desktop is as easy as positioning your closed Air in the BookArc cradle and plugging it in… and because your Air docks in a closed position, it should run even faster than if you just plugged your display normally, because the Air’s GeForce 320M only needs to drive a single display.

The BookArc is only $39.99, but it won’t ship until February. If you want to keep appraised of when it becomes available, you can sign up for notifications over at the official website.

Apple Releases MacBook Air (Late 2010) Software Update Version 2.0

By

Apple has released another  software update for the late 2010 model MacBook Air.  The update isn’t currently showing up in Software Update, but it can be downloaded directly using this link.

Apple’s comments on what the update does are rather sparse all they say is that:

This update resolves an issue with some MacBook Air (Late 2010) systems that prevents the system from sleeping.

The new MacBook Air has had a few problems with the sleep/wake features of Mac OS X as well as video problems being reported by early adopters (myself included).  However, I have not seen or experienced the problems that people continue to complain about regarding external monitors and video.

Try this update out and let us know by leaving a comment how it works out for you.

OWC releases MacBook Air SSD Upgrade Kits

By

Feeling pinched for space in your new MacBook Air? I know I certainly am, even (or, perhaps, especially) with a 500GB USB hard drive perpetually tethered to my 11-incher.

I’m interested, then, in OWC’s recently unveiled Mercury Auro Pro Express Kits, which are compatible with both the late 2010 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Pros. They are available in three sizes: a $499.99 180GB dSSD, a $579.99 240GB SSD, and a $1,179.99 360GB SSD… all of which are not only bigger than Apple’s in-house drives, but faster as well.

Much as I’d like a bigger SSD in my MacBook Air, at those prices, I’m tempted to wait until they come down a bit… but that might not be an option. Apple has already shut down one company selling MacBook Air SSD upgrade kits, and it’s likely they’ll do the same here, so if you’re going to get one, better scrape that $500 together fast.

Another Fix for Flickering MacBook Air External Displays [How to]

By

According to a post on Apple Discussion forums by user addcore AppleCare suggested a fix for the occasional problem where an external monitor attached to a MacBook Air would flicker. However, the fix doesn’t seem to be a complete cure, but according to addcore, ” I’ve seen two tiny instances which is a major improvement to the every thirty sec flickering. ”

So not completely cured, but better. Read on to find out how this was accomplished.
