How would you like to burn through your monthly mobile data cap in 16 seconds flat? The answer to that question is probably ‘not very much’ but none-the-less, that’s where technology is headed, with Samsung now saying that they’ll have the world’s first 5G devices on the market by 2020.

According to a report by Yonhap News, Samsung is testing a prototype platform for future mobile internet connections. The prototype uses a radio with 64 antenna elements, and all together, those antennas are capable of downloading data at a staggering 1 gigabit per second.

Even better? That’s not the upper range of the technology. It could theoretically get even faster. It’s like FiOS for your smartphone.

There’s a lot of questions here — what the hell is battery life like? Will the industry adopt a technology and standard that Samsung controls? etc. — but there’s plenty of time to iron these details out. Who knows? Maybe the iPhone 10 and Samsung Galaxy S13 will be 5Gers.
