Initial iPhone 5 Shipments Plagued by Touch Panel Issues

Despite recent rumors that suggest there will not be an iPhone 5 this October — just the iPhone 4S instead — DigiTimes reports that there are issues currently affecting the supply of iPhone 5 touch panels, which will plague the initial shipments of the device.

Wintek, a company that makes touch panels for the iPhone, is reportedly has discovered a “delayed bubble” defect with causes problems to iPhone touch panels in the later stages of assembly:

The defect, “delayed bubble”, is difficult to avoid during panel production, particularly when the defect is not detected during the process of laminating touch panels, and only later found during assembly, the sources said.

These issues could mean that Apple doesn’t have as many units of its next-generation iPhone ready for shipping by the time it launches next month.

However, since Wintek already makes touch panels for the iPhone 4, it is expected to have these issues resolved shortly, and has indicated to DigiTimes that “all of its products are being delivered on schedule.”

It’s also worth noting that Wintek only produces around a quarter of iPhone touch panels, with Chimei Innolux and TPH Holding producing the other 75%.

Delayed bubble? Is that like when you are sitting in a pool, release a fart, but it gets trapped in your bathing trunks, allowing you to release it when an unsuspecting victim nears?

Unless Apple is veering away from their “new phone a year” trend, the iPhone 5 will be released his year.  Apple is obsessive about their delivery dates.  I can’t see them delaying the release of the 5.  Even if that means shipping less of what they had projected.  Just like they knew of the antenna issue with the iPhone 4 last year, but they sent them out anyway before Fall.  And re-shipped the new 4’s that had improvements to the antenna (not fixed, improvements), by March of 2011.
