Fan favorite (and BAFTA award-winning) point and click adventure game series Broken Sword is getting a sequel, called The Serpent’s Curse, and it’s being funded in part via Kickstarter. It’s a new adventure for Mac (and PC) starring series regulars George and Nico being developed by series creator, Charles Cecil, and his company Revolution Software.
The Broken Sword series has garnered many awards, including four BAFTAs, the Pocket Gamer Gold Award, and a Game Developer’s Choice Award for Excellence in Writing. The iPhone/iPad version of Broken Sword: Director’s Cut has an average Metacritic score of 91. That’s a great score!
Needless to say, the Broken Sword franchise has a fairly large fanbase as well, as you can see with their current Kickstarter campaign, created to help the current 2D adventure speed up and finish the development process. The Kickstarter video alone may have drawn a lot of attention, as it has director Cecil interacting with his animated, fictional characters in a Paris art show, where the mystery begins.
When a mysterious painting is stolen during an armed raid on a Paris gallery, George and Nico are thrown by chance into the investigation together. From Paris to London and beyond, the trail becomes a race against time as dark forces from Europe’s turbulent past are woken from their slumber. Broken Sword characters old and new are encountered – but who can George and Nico trust? The journey they are on reveals a conspiracy as old as the written word, whose ancient heresies will cause innocent blood to spill once more…
The project was launched on the crowdsource funding website on August 23, and now – a mere four days later – they’ve passed the halfway point with over $284,000 in pledges toward the $400,000 goal. A pledge of $15 gets you a copy of Broken Sword – the Serpent’s Curse for Mac or PC when it is finished, while a $25 pledge brings the copy of the game as well as high resolution digital comic versions of several other games in the series. More details of prize and pledge levels can be found on the Kickstarter page.
