Apple recently requested that Samsung start designing its tablets differently. Why? So as not to infringe on the iPad’s precious design.
What would Samsung’s next tablet look like if Apple had its way? The answer: really, really bad.
This is what Apple’s lawyers proposed to Samsung:
- Overall shape that isn’t rectangular, or doesn’t have rounded corners.
- Thick frames rather than a thin rim around the front surface.
- Front surface that isn’t entirely flat.
- Profiles that aren’t thin.
- Cluttered appearance.
That translates to Samsung making a fat, “cluttered” tablet with a thick bezel in the shape of an octagon. Let’s see how well that sells.
Apple told Samsung to make the worst tablet imaginable. As Thomas Baekdal eloquently describes on Baekdal, Apple didn’t design the iPad, it undesigned it. The iPad is the “core essence” of what a tablet device should be. Apple asking Samsung to make something totally contradictory to common sense is pompous and condescending.

Those lawyers are such great comedians.
I USUALY agree with most things apple decides on but this…. is way to far
They could just make tablets with the same form factor they had BEFORE the iPad came out…except nobody wanted to buy them then, and they won’t want to buy them now.
The picture you see is NOT something Apple presented. It is a mock up based on Apple’s suggestions.
id buy that!
If this is true, than Apple’s paranoia has reached epic proportions and totally unjustified so… it’s been shown time and time again ever since the debut of the original iPad that Apple’s competitors don’t have clue as to what a viable tablet is…
For a dollar!
I like it!!!
Samsung should stick with their original design (pre iPad era)

its like implicitly saying to samsung go and make crappy tablets to loose money bec we own rectangles with rounded corners. apple is the bully. apple should be stopped with this stupidity.
Obviously. I was talking about there “guidelines” they wanted samsung to follow
please make a car with rectangular wheels
WILL NOT RETURN TO Cultofmac the next 7 days, with junk articles like these. Be it via the filthy Gizmodo or not.

I went to a Verizon store two weeks ago, and while there, went to play with what I thought was an iPad 2. It wasn’t until I picked it up and couldn’t find the home button that I discovered it was actually a Samsung Galaxy tablet. I had it in my hands, and still thought it was an iPad 2 until I saw the buttons were wrong.
There is a difference between something being similar because it’s the same sort of device versus being a direct ripoff. Samsung’s copying place them only one step above the folks selling knockoffs on Canal Street.
Apple makes fantastic products ! It should just stop worrying about what other company’s do and get on with it.
I don’t think there is many people who would accidentally buy a galaxy tab thinking it was an iPad.
liar, Galaxy tab has no buttons plus, iPad has a logo on it. And there are big letters that says SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB in front. Unless if you can’t read.
he din say that Galaxy Tab has button, he say that he can’t find the home button. If it is so easy to differentiate, why Samsung’s lawyer failed to do so at the court? This is a joke right? ahahahaha
Apple’s arguments are getting sillier by the minute.
What’s next? Only Apple can use aluminium in computers case. Get real!
To Apple i would say: Please devote yourself to be 2 steps ahead and continue to built superior products, while the competition gets baffled. People are not as dumb as you think. I person who buys an Galaxy Tab or Phone, know it’s not buying an iPad and iPhone.
Once again: STOP BEING SILLY AND GET REAL!
These suggestions were indeed very stupid…
That said, Apples point still stands, Samsung could do devices that look more unique rather than so closely resembling the iPad as they do, Asus, Acer and HTC have made several tablets with their own distinct look.
So, Apple complains that Samsung copied off them, yet they completely ripped of HP/Compaq.
Point being: Apple wasn’t the first to design a tablet like this.
Gizmodo rehash – and shitty Gizmodo too. Wow, guys. Just wow. And you even included the art from Apple’s filing…oh wait…that’s the Gizmodo mock-up that totally misrepresents what Apple was trying to accomplish by offering suggestions about how Samsung’s design for a tablet could be different.
As has been discussed elsewhere on the web (obviously not filtering down to this neck of the woods), there are fundamental differences between design patents and technical patents. Apple’s design patents add up to something more like a trademark – in this case, a distinctive, minimalistic look for the iPad. The point of Apple presenting alternatives is that if Samsung had not copied *even one* of the distinguishing characteristics of the iPad, that they would not be infringing. Instead, Samsung chose to copy them *all* of them – to such a “slavish” degree that Samsung’s attorneys couldn’t tell the difference between the 2 tablets when held up by a judge from a few feet away. To take all of the examples, concoct some Windows Paint mock-up and call it Apple’s intention is as stupid here as it was when this tripe was originally expectorated.
Jesus Diaz is known for his sensationalist frothing, which is why I avoid Gizmodo and its 14 daily Lego and sex toy posts like the plague. You guys do yourself zero service by not only lifting from those asshats, but lifting a sensationalist article that gets everything wrong. Do better.
I’ve heard that it’s now “obvious” that tablets “have to” all look like the iPad because form follows function. Horse hockey! Tablets looked nothing like the iPad before the iPad came along. It only became “obvious” when Apple engineers and designers did all the hard work and stripped away all the gunk to make an elegant and simple slate that is selling by the skillions these days.
For all those that now feel that no other designs are possible, take a look at the Nook and the Kindle and Kindle Fire. They’re very different from the iPad, so at least Barnes & Noble and Amazon designers had some creativity and came up with something different. There are millions of ways to make products look different from one another–unless you’re too lazy to put in the time to make your product unique and just decide to steal all the hard work another company has created.
And no, Apple didn’t steal HP’s tablet design. If you compare the early HP tablet with the iPad, they look very different. For one thing, HP’s table is grey and has various bits hanging off the edges. However, put the recent tablets from Samsung, HP and other companies up against the iPad, and they look nearly identical.
I don’t for a moment believe that Apple’s directives to make competitor’s tablets thick and cluttered is anything but tongue in cheek baiting. Just do something different!
It’s a good thing Apple doesn’t own a food franchise, or they’d make sure McDonald’s and Burger King made their burgers differently. “Put your meat patties on the outside of the bun.”
A more accurate picture of what tablets looked like before the iPad.
Aside from the back bumps and the color, I personally think it is a cool tablet.
I wouldn’t unless I get it for free and then i might think of breaking it
If Samsung designed a tablet exactly like the one in your comment, they wouldn’t be in court. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 is identical to the iPad. Apple contends that it’s not accident. Your illustration does nothing to derail that argument.
Maybe you could pull some prior art from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Crap. I hope this doesn’t mean Apple is going patent-troll happy now that their visionary has reached room temperature. Makes me sad, because it means they have a good chance of sitting on their arses and rotting (again) instead of carving a bold future.
Let ’em steal from you Apple! Don’t worry about yesterday – keep reinventing yourselves and show us the “next great thing”!
(I write this as a technologist of 20+ years, the first 8 of which were spent primarily on Mac. I own an iPod and an airport wireless router…the first was a gift and the second seems to be lasting longer than the Cisco it replaced.)

Jesus diaz is bad, but he’s no brownlee =)
“Commander Adama, you need to see this…”
samsung will figure something out like it did with the sgs3, yes the sgs3 isnt out yet, but there are leaked pictures out and it kinda looked like the wave
sorry but no, you may try and say that Apple invented the square or the wheel for that matter, but no, tablets looked like the iPad before the iPad, you can obviously pick a few with different formats, you obviously did, but most of them were just squares with a screen and not much else, maybe a few buttons… look, Apple has it’s merits, it made tablets a hype, made a beautiful product, elegant, but tablets always looked squares, and Apple is going too far with this patent trooling.
Thank You
