It’s September 1st, and that means that its time to head back to school. Small surprise, then, that Apple’s latest ad for the iPad 2 emphasizes what a fantastic learning tool their tablet is, highlighting everything from keeping up with TED to learning to draw Chinese characters to touring the solar system to playing a game of chess. “There’s never been a better time to learn,” the ad’s tagline asserts. With the iPad 2 around, we’d have to agree.

I hacked a Palm Pre this last week, and have been loving the experience. Yes, I am a serious Apple Fanboy, but honestly, themiltitasking and the “cards” feature is the best thing ever. The hardware is a piece of crap, it’s slow and laggy…But I love surfing the internet with it. I think Apple should buy Web OS and do their shiz with it. Then the perfect phone will be complete.

But is it so much better that people would abandon their iPhones? Nope. That didn’t happen. It won’t happen. Whoever topples Apple’s little iPhone perch will need to do what Apple does, but substantially better, or substantially cheaper. Otherwise, what’s the compelling reason to switch?

Cards? It’s different, but is it better? Multitasking? Highly overrated. Notifications? I’d like better than Apple’s current anemia, but it’s not worth switching to another platform.
