Less than a month since its release, there are nearly 5,000 apps available for the iPad, most are games but there are some important early sellers in the medical and finance titles.

Distimo, a start-up that analyzes app stats, tallied some 4,870 applications for Apple’s magical tablet to date. (You can download the full report here.)

Games dominate iPad apps, with 32% of the total at 1,577 titles so far, Entertainment and books trail far behind, together they total about half as many apps with 455 and 396 titles, respectively.

These numbers are still dwarfed by iPhone apps totaling 186,414 to date. In its infancy, at least, iPad apps are trending towards more paid than free: 73% of iPhone apps are paid, while 80% of iPad apps are paid.

Average prices for iPad apps are also about 22% more expensive than iPhone apps:  iPhone apps cost $3.82 on average, whereas the average sticker price for an iPad apps is $4.67.

The priciest iPad apps are medical and finance, weighing in at $42.11 and $18.48, respectively. This is significantly more than the average price for applications in these categories for iPhone ($10.74 and $5.74).

It’ll be interesting to see how the iPad app business changes as the numbers grow.
