If there was ever an Apple launch that seemed to favor the Greg Packers of this world, it’s that of the iPad 2. Uncharacteristically, Apple won’t be taking any orders for the device until the date it hits store shelves: March 11th.
It’s hard to say what this implies. By one way of thinking, it means Apple’s not confident it can supply iPad 2 pre-order demand; thought of another way, Apple may simply want to avoid the problem of customers getting their new products delivered several days early by FedEx.
Either way, though, it’s left most of us wondering just when Apple will allow customers to start ordering the iPad. It looks like now we know: MacAppsDaily is reporting that an Apple phone rep told them that online sales of the iPad 2 would begin at 12:01am PT on March 11th, with “free, fast shipping.” 9to5Mac has also confirmed that time as well.
Looks like a late night for me on Friday. Who else will be awake?

Your late night will be Thursday, not Friday. 12:01 AM March 11 is one minute past midnight into Friday morning in the Pacific Time Zone. In the East Coast, it’s 3:01 AM…

Wouldn’t 12:01 AM PST on 3/11 be early Friday morning, meaning a late night for you on Thursday?

It has nada to do with supply
it has to do with avoiding the negative PR of no lines like what happened with the Verizon iphone. They are hoping since folks can’t order online until Friday and thus won’t get it until Monday or later, they will just go to the store over the weekend.
If you order online it is shipped to your house. No exceptions.
So far the rest of the details suggest they will not be doing reservations this time. At least not until after opening weekend. Same thing as I recall that they did with the iphone 4.
So are the other retailers being forced to sell after the 5pm time frame or will they be selling after 12:01?
I can see why alot of retailers are now offering a offers the ipad.
