A few hours ago, an explosion rocked Foxconn’s Chengdu manufacturing facility, which is one of the main producers of iPad 2s within China…. and it’s looking increasingly likely that the explosion might have occurred on the iPad 2 production line.
There are few details to report yet.
However, the explosion appears to be serious, as there are currently more than ten fire engines on the scene, along with an equal number of police cars and quite a few ambulances.
The explosion occurred inside an operating room within the facility, and apparently resulted in many materials being hurled violently from the building.
MIC Gadget has some video of the aftermath of the explosions here.
The explosion allegedly happened in the A5 building, which is allegedly part of the iPad 2 production line.
It appears there are expectations that that building — part of a larger facility — might collapse as a result of the explosion. A local Chinese news paper is reporting that the walls of the facility have been shattered.
More than a hundred workers are employed in that part of the Chengdu facility.
On-scene emergency personnel are now warning reporters that there may be a second explosion, and to stay back from the buildings.
This is a breaking story, and there aren’t many details on the ground right now, including how Apple’s own iPad 2 supply might be affected by the disaster. More details as we get them.
Update: This is increasingly looking very serious. The explosion has already chalked up two deaths, according to reports, as well as sixteen injuries, three of them critically. It could have been worse, though: the explosion is now being said to having occurred during a shift change.
Update 2: Foxconn has just issued a statement.
We can confirm that at approximately 7 pm on May 20, there was an explosion at our Chengdu campus. At this point, we can also confirm that there were two fatalities with injuries to 16 other employees. We are working with medical officials to provide treatment to the injured employees and we are working with government and law enforcement officials to contact the families of all employees affected by this tragedy.
The situation has been brought under control by the fire department and the cause of this explosion is being investigated by local police officials. Foxconn is cooperating fully with that investigation.
Production has been suspended at the site of the explosion until the completion of the investigation. The safety of our employees is our highest priority and we will do whatever is required to determine and address the cause of this tragic accident.

Hope the iPads are ok :(
cretin
The first sign of the apocolypse?
Let’s just hope nobody was seriously hurt. The iPads don’t matter in the big scene.
is no one seriously offended that this article only seems to be concerned about iPads and not for perhaps the human lives that may have been injured or worse?  this is amazing.
That was my first thought too. Grow a heart John – no one of consequence cares about iPad 2s when people may have been injured/killed.
There’s nothing in this piece to suggest that we are unfeeling  to the human loss or suffering that might be going in Chengdu — in fact, quite the contrary — but we are an Apple news site. It’s our JOB to at least mention this might affect supply, and that’s all we did: mention it.
What offends me are the morons in Google reader who “like” every one of the articles around the explosion. Â I click on their profiles and sure enough… Fandroids.
Seriously?  That just re-enforces why I buy Apple and stay as far away from Android fanboys as possible. (easy enough to do because most still live in their mothers basement)
They don’t need Terrorists in China!
The Chinese are experts at Blowing Themselves Up. They have been doing it since the days of Genghis Khan. The ones running Fireworks Factories and the guys hanging around mine shafts a few kilometers below the surface are the most pro-efficient at it. Anyway there is around 2 Billion of them so I don’t think you will have to worry to much about your iPad supplies.
I dunno it’s “Fandroids” I think it’s just the problem with Facebook and Google Reader’s “like” semantics. I don’t “like” this, but sharing it’s easiest by clicking the like button.
Seriously!!! People are injured/dead and you come out with that rubbish!!
Apple news is implied by the fact that this is an iPad factory. This event is STILL UNFOLDING and you’re addressing the potential shortage of tech as a result. Don’t hide behind your job to excuse your lack of tact – a severe hyperbole, but it was someone’s “job” to turn on the gas in the Nazi death chambers. Doesn’t excuse it or make it ok. Exercising tact and practicing subtlety in times of tragedy is classy. Marching on using your job title as a crutch with little concern for the human cost of it is not.
Agreed. YouTube’s mechanic is much more well-rounded. It’s high time for a “dislike” button, as well as a “share” button…
 fucking ignorant cunt
This is racist garbage. Â I don’t get this at all. Â Cult of Mac basically broke this huge story, and all people can think of to say is racist claptrap like this or smug replies about the iPads? Â
Bigotted jerk. Â
Who gives a shit about the effect on supply. You know something brownlee most of your garbage stories I chalked up to link bait and you being a lazy uncreative hack but now I see you for what you really are, another head up your ass isheep. Do everyone on here a favor and get a job cleaning toilets.
My first thought was I hope this does not delay production of the Ipad or push back any future release for the next models.

People like them are whats wrong with the world and are the ones who lend credence to everyone saying Apple fans are a bunch of ignorant cunts.
So Foxxconn is now on fire and people are injured and dead, considering the employer it doesn’t surprise me in the least. Gou doesn’t care about worker welfare and it was only a matter of time before a full scale industrial accident happened and people were mangled and killed. I guess the new wave of iSheep reports and parrot shows will now involve these spoiled bratty white collar assholes complaining how they can’t get their iPad2 with a snap of their fingers. You know its to bad this didn’t occur during a holiday when NONE OF THE WORKERS WERE ON SITE. It would have been nice to watch video of the whole fucking sweatshop burning to the ground.
i am concerned about the people, but my initial reaction was, poor ipad 2 that could have been one of my babies
What are you talking about? Â You are the one making intemperate nasty remarks. Â John didn’t say anything untoward in the story, and your remarks were far worse than “Michael Griffin” who probably just didn’t think before he wrote. Â
Your the one that needs your mouth washed out with soap and your the one making all the accusations and ignorant remarks.
i’ve been reading Brownlee’s garbage articles far longer then you Peabody and know what I’m talking about when I say HACK so STFU and just go back to hanging out with the rest of the retards on BGR. Norm and Goofan think you’re an idiot and so do I.
Phewww, good thing my ipad2 was already shipped out. Got confirmation from UPS earlier that it departed China at 4:15am, just a few hours before the explosion. Thank goodness.
I hope no one’s hurt.
If only IQ and knowledge actually *were* based on other people’s opinions. Â :-)Â
I’m sure I could find a preponderance of folks that think you are “intellectually challenged” as well.
Wishing doesn’t make it so unfortunately. Â :-(
PS – I’m pretty sure I’ve been reading this site since the very day it launched.
In the article it mentions in the update that people were injured. Thanks Cult of Mac for keeping us abreast of the situation with the people working there.
Also, isn’t it odd that it happened during a shift change?
I we cared about human rights and suffering, we wouldn’t stand in line to buy things from China.
haha, first comment “pro-efficient”. close, but try again!
Â
This incident will surely affect
the sales of iPad 2 significantly. It is no secret that there is a scarcity on
this device but even when the situation doesn’t favor Apple, the sales of other
tablets don’t seem to catch up. After what happened to the Foxconn plant,
someone has to be accountable for this accident.

Wow! Thank you! I continually necessary to write on my blog some thing like that. Can I implement a fragment of your post to my internet site? nike air max 2010
If IQ was based on peoples opinions you’d be so stupid you’d be dangerous.
P.S.
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been reading this site you and Brownlee still need to get both your heads out of your asses
