Outlook 2011 has a much nicer interface, and it’s certainly more stable than Entourage ever was.  It’s still CRAP though.  There are two major problems that I have with it.

    1.  Archiving is a total joke!  Instead of giving Outlook 2011 users the same archive feature that their Windows using couterparts have, Microsoft has given them the same crap that they had with Entourage.  If you want to get back into your archives to search for old emails, you must reimport all of those messages back into Outlook before you can read them.  Yes, all of the thousands of messages in your archive have to be reimported.  That’s stupid!  Why archive if you must first reimport them back into Outlook?  In Windows, a user simply needs to open the archive to read through the messages inside.  They can also leave the archive open in Outlook, or just close it when they’re finished.  Why didn’t Microsoft finish the job and build this feature in properly?  This is a huge deal breaker for a lot of the clients that I take care of.
    2.  Outlook seems to continually get corrupted.  Repairing the database doesn’t help since it will become corrupted again and again.  It leaves behind it’s “backup” data bases that will eventually eat up all of your hard drive space.  Users can clear the cache on individual folders, but how many users will actually do that regularly?  The only way to fix the problem properly is to delete and re-add the user’s account.  Again, how many users will do that on their own?
In the end, Outlook is just a redesigned Entourage.  Microsoft needs to get off their ass and stop producing CRAP.  I moved off of Entourage in 2005 when Apple finally created a mail client that was robust and had great features.  Seven years later, I’m still loving it.  When Mail.app gets screwed up, it’s easy to fix.  Archiving really isn’t necessary since all I need to do is move mail from the server into a local folder that isn’t stored on the server.  Therefore, I dont’ have to worry about reimporting my “archived” messages just to read them.  As long as your company is using a newer version of Exchange, you’re fine using Apple’s mail, contacts, and calendar solutions.  Office 2011 as a whole is a good product, but Outlook is CRAP!
