How has the waiting game for a new iPhone affected activations at initial carrier AT&T? The company announced Thursday it activated 3.6 million iPhones in the June quarter, more than half of the total 5.6 million smartphones sold during the period. That mirrors AT&T’s March quarter, placing all eyes on Verizon Wireless, Apple’s second U.S. iPhone carrier.

AT&T said iPhone activations “remain strong” with 24 percent from new subscribers. During the March three-month period, the carrier announced 23 percent of iPhone activations were from new customers. Friday Verizon Wireless announces results from the first full quarter of iPhone sales. The June quarter is being intensely watched because the tech giant skipped its usual time period for announcing new handsets for a later date, expected in September.

Tuesday, Apple reported selling 20.3 million iPhones during the June quarter and international sales accounted for 62 percent of the company’s quarterly revenue. Such numbers also indicate Apple’s sales concentration is shifting away from the U.S. and to emerging markets, such as China and India.

How are Android-powered smartphones doing domestically? AT&T announced sales of “Android and other smartphones” (perhaps non-iPhones) doubled compared to the same period in 2010, accounting for more than 40 percent of smartphones sold during the June quarter.

The question becomes, what should we expect from Verizon Friday and does AT&T’s flat June quarter increase the importance of Apple adding additional U.S. carriers?
