Following its report yesterday that promises a thinner, lighter iPhone 5 by the end of this year, The Wall Street Journal now offers us some information on Apple’s 2012 iPhone, which it says will boast a whole “new way of charging.”

Citing people “briefed on Apple’s plans,” the report says Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone will be a “major revamp” over previous models, with one new feature that could see the demise of old-fashioned charging cables:

Investors expect a bigger boost to Apple’s phone business next year. People briefed on Apple’s plans said the company is planning a major iPhone revamp then, with one person saying the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone.

Although it’s unclear what the new method of charging may be, many are speculating that the device will adopt a wireless system, such as induction charging, that would negate the need to tether your device to a power source.

Coupled with the wireless iTunes syncing that will be introduced to with iOS 5 this fall, future iPhones may enable us to wave goodbye to our cables altogether for a truly wireless experience.

In addition to these details on Apple’s 2012 iPhone, the WSJ report also mentions the smaller, cheaper iPhone we often hear about, previously dubbed the “iPhone nano.” Apparently, Apple is continuing to develop this device:

Apple has also been working on a less-expensive phone with new features such as an edge-to-edge screen, according to this person.
