With the unveiling of iOS 5 at WWDC earlier this week, Apple announced a few features that may be cause for concern for some third-party application developers. One feature that wasn’t mentioned, however, may worry those who produce panoramic camera applications.
A few lines of code discovered in the first beta release of iOS 5 suggest Apple is planning a native panoramic camera function for iOS 5, which could make applications such as 360 Panorama, AutoStitch Panorama, and Microsoft’s Photosynth obsolete.
Within code relating to the iOS Camera app, there are three lines that read:
PANO_OPTION = “Take Panorama”;
SAVING PANORAMA = “Saving Panorama”;
CANCEL_PANO_BUTTON_TITLE = “Cancel”;
It’s unclear whether the function can be somehow accessed through the first iOS 5 beta, but we may see it introduced in future beta releases before the firmware goes public later this year.

I use photosynth and love it..so…if it’s included, and works good…I’ll use it..I am all for cleaning up my apps…so many that don’t get used….
Apple pioneered this technology with QuickTime VR and QuickTime VR Authoring Studio. It’s about time that they actually used it and advanced the technology.
