Apple plans to overhaul the Apple Watch lineup as new types of wearables start gaining traction among consumers. As part of the revamp, it supposedly wants to reintroduce a Ceramic casing for the Apple Watch.
Apple could even use a round display on future Apple Watch models, though nothing is confirmed yet.
Apple plans big Apple Watch revamp for the future
Over the last few years, Apple has only given the Apple Watch lineup a few minor updates. The last redesign arrived with the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024, introducing a slimmer chassis, a larger screen area and a wider aspect ratio.
Even the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 is not expected to bring any radical new features or design changes. However, Apple plans to make some big changes to its smartwatch lineup in the future.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, says that Apple’s industrial design team is “exploring a broader rethink of its smartwatches”
Screenless fitness wearables and smart rings are gaining popularity among consumers. Apple is taking this seriously and has even considered launching a screenless fitness tracker. Google recently launched the Fitbit Air, while the Oura Ring has emerged as a popular smart ring for people looking to ditch smartwatches.
For the Apple Watch, it is considering a round display, though Gurman says such a model may never see the light of day.
Apple is exploring several other options, including launching more affordable and premium models to cater to the low-end and high-end markets.
Apple Watch Series 12 will not bring any radical changes
For now, Apple has not finalized the direction it wants to take or how it plans to overhaul the Apple Watch lineup. But it seems certain that the company will revamp the lineup due to growing competition.
Before a radically new Apple Watch arrives, though, Apple will launch the Apple Watch Series 12 in September. Gurman says it may come with a ceramic casing. And if that doesn’t happen this year, Apple may introduce it with the 2027 model.
