Like one of the commenters says, “What other phone platform has a mascot THIS cool????”
Leander Kahney is the editor and publisher of Cult of Mac.
Leander is a longtime technology reporter and the author of six acclaimed books about Apple, including two New York Times bestsellers: Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products and Inside Steve’s Brain, a biography of Steve Jobs.
He’s also written a top-selling biography of Apple CEO Tim Cook and authored Cult of Mac and Cult of iPod, which both won prestigious design awards. Most recently, he was co-author of Cult of Mac, 2nd Edition.
Leander has been reporting about Apple and technology for nearly 30 years.
Before founding Cult of Mac as an independent publication, Leander was news editor at Wired.com, where he was responsible for the day-to-day running of the Wired.com website. He headed up a team of six section editors, a dozen reporters and a large pool of freelancers. Together the team produced a daily digest of stories about the impact of science and technology, and won several awards, including several Webby Awards, 2X Knight-Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism and the 2010 MIN (Magazine Industry Newsletter) award for best blog, among others.
Before being promoted to news editor, Leander was Wired.com’s senior reporter, primarily covering Apple. During that time, Leander published a ton of scoops, including the first in-depth report about the development of the iPod. Leander attended almost every keynote speech and special product launch presented by Steve Jobs, including the historic launches of the iPhone and iPad. He also reported from almost every Macworld Expo in the late ’90s and early ‘2000s, including, sadly, the last shows in Boston, San Francisco and Tokyo. His reporting for Wired.com formed the basis of the first Cult of Mac book, and subsequently this website.
Before joining Wired, Leander was a senior reporter at the legendary MacWeek, the storied and long-running weekly that documented Apple and its community in the 1980s and ’90s.
Leander has written for Wired magazine (including the Issue 16.04 cover story about Steve Jobs’ leadership at Apple, entitled Evil/Genius), Scientific American, The Guardian, The Observer, The San Francisco Chronicle and many other publications.
Leander has a postgrad diploma in artificial intelligence from the University of Aberdeen, and a BSc (Hons) in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex.
He has a diploma in journalism from the UK’s National Council for the Training of Journalists.
Leander lives in San Francisco, California, and is married with four children. He’s an avid biker and has ridden in many long-distance bike events, including California’s legendary Death Ride.

In comes a dude wearing jeans and a turtle neck with a large safety pin…you finish the ending.
I don’t want a dancing robot I want my gadgets to work right…
C’mon, now, you can’t be serious?! A goofy dancing “android mascot”? Yeah, that’ll bring in customers by the tens. Yup, where’s the guy with the large safety pin?
Give that Droid a garden hose and a mop and send him to one of those Japanese nuke reactors!
That does it, I’m selling my iPhone 4 and switching to Android because of this video. Man’s got moves the like I’ve never seen before.
So, instead of showing how well their crappy products don’t work, they have to show a dancing trash can?
Wait… cool? And I thought Apple owners had more taste.
If this is the best Android can do for advertising they have a lot to learn. Huge major fail IMHO.
Then again their target demographic seems to be 15 year old D&D players, so maybe they are on to something.
I would pay to see Ninja Steve work some ‘magic’ into the green trashcan
‘dancing android is ERIC SCHMIDT!!
This is his new post after his ‘adult supervision’ crack at new CEO Larry Page.
iPhone = Classy, Creative, Mature Adult consumer
Android = individuals with the mentality of a COSPLAY activity
i would say the Android mascot fairly represents the body shape of the average android user.
I demand Apple counter with a dancing Happy Mac.
And this makes android better than the iPhone how….? exactly.
Watching that Android dance almost made me forget about the fragmentation, battery issues, lenses that stick out and scratch, a huge clock that covers most of the UI and viruses. Keep dancing Android, keep dancing.
Apple would never stoop to this level. The most they would do is a slightly embarrassed shaking of the head upon whitening this spectacle.
nice
Wow so many grumpy commentors. You’re allowed to love your iPhone AND still appreciate seeing something cool. That is true confidence in one’s opinion.
If this wasn’t Android related there wouldn’t be so much bile. Deep breathes people.
Hey… I was there! Thats in Taiwan! Right next to the 101!
Haters gonna hate =)
iOS, the platform so awesome we don’t have to use lame dancing blow up toys to get your attention,
Blow gun. Chuck Norris style
Sucks big time!
And, Why does a platform have to do this? They are supposed to prove it via features and stability. A big laugh at Android.
This guy was dancing in the costume for a couple years before Android was launched. Android is now being sued by Roka Chobotian for copying his avatar/costume for their own.
Is that robot on meth?
Too funny
