Apple has rolled out a somewhat surprise Google Chrome extension that allows users to access iCloud Passwords on Windows machines.
You can use it to sync all the passwords you’ve created on Mac, iPhone, and iPad to your Windows desktop. And to sync any passwords you create in Chrome to iCloud Keychain for use on Apple devices.
We’ll show you how to get set up.
Apple killed off Safari for Windows almost a decade ago, making it more difficult for users who also owned Apple devices to share things like bookmarks, browsing history, and passwords between devices.
Many turned to third-party password managers, such as Dashlane, to sync login credentials across multiple browsers and platforms. But for Google Chrome users, accessing iCloud Passwords is now even simpler.
All you need is the iCloud Passwords extension.
Accessing iCloud Passwords in Chrome for Windows
Officially released by Apple, the iCloud Passwords extension brings all the passwords you’ve saved on your Apple devices into Chrome. You can use them to autofill login screens just like you would in Safari.
What’s more, if you create a new website login inside Chrome on Windows, the iCloud Passwords extension will automatically sync it to your iCloud Keychain on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
To set it up, first ensure you’re running the latest Chrome release, then follow these steps:
- Find the iCloud Passwords extension in the Chrome Web Store.
- Click the blue Add to Chrome button.
- Confirm by clicking Add extension when prompted.
- Click the iCloud Passwords button in Chrome’s menu bar.
- Sign into your iCloud account using your Apple ID.
You will now be able to insert passwords saved to your iCloud Keychain when logging into websites.
Not just for Windows
Because iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension, it’s available wherever you can access a desktop version of Chrome. That includes macOS as well, though iCloud Keychain is already available there.
