Work has wrapped up on the full version of macOS Catalina, and Apple sent the resulting Golden Master to developers. This is the last step before releasing the first non-beta of version 10.15 to the general public.
Catalina splits iTunes into a number of other applications, and allows iPads to be easily used as a Mac’s second display.
What’s in macOS Catalina 10.15 GM
Apple unveiled the replacement for macOS Mojave in June, and has introduced beta versions through the summer and now into fall. That process is essentially over now that macOS Catalina 10.15 GM is going out.
The juggernaut that was iTunes is being divided into Apple Music, Apple Podcast and Apple TV. Another fun new option is Apple Arcade, an all-you-can-play games subscription service for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
ScreenTime makes the jump from iOS to Macs. Speaking of bringing over iOS apps, developers can get excited about Catalyst as it simplifies the process of porting iPad apps over to the Mac.
The wait for macOS Catalina is almost over
Previously, info leaked from Apple to indicate that macOS Catalina will launch tomorrow. Even if that’s not correct, the introduction of the Golden Master means it’ll be very soon. Still, Apple has only committed to having it out by the end of this month.
According to Apple, the following notebooks and desktops can all upgrade to macOS 10.15:

- MacBook Air 2012 and later
- MacBook Pro 2012 and later
- Mac mini 2012 and later
- iMac 2012 and later
- iMac Pro 2017 and later
- Mac Pro 2013 and later
