Not all Apple devices will escape the taxes being levied next month on goods imported from China. The Trump Administration decided to delay tariffs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, but other popular products will still get slapped with a 10% import tax, including Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod
A trade war near miss
As part of the trade war, President Trump announced at the beginning of this month that he’ll put import taxes on billions of dollars of additional goods being imported to the US from China starting Sept. 1. Included on the list was virtually all Apple’s products.
The Administration changed its mind this morning, delaying tariffs on all phones and laptops until Dec. 15.
Some Apple products still hit by Trump tariffs
However, Apple won’t completely escape. Items from its Wearables, Home and Accessories category will still be subject to the 10% import tax coming Sept. 1, according to Reuters. That includes AirPods wireless in-ear headphones, the Apple Watch wearable, and HomePods smart speaker.
Strong sales of these items helped push up Apple’s bottom line last quarter. The company’s revenue in this category was up almost 50% when compared to the same period of 2018.
A 10% import tax could force Apple to raise prices. Or it could absorb the extra cost, cutting into its profits.
