Apple may not put an OLED screen on every new iPhone this year, but a new report is claiming all iPhones will pack the new display tech within two years.
According to the latest rumor out of Apple’s supply chain in Asia, the Cupertino plans to double adoption of OLED panels in 2018 before going all-in in 2019.
This year’s high-end iPhone 8 is expected to be the first Apple device to get an OLED screen. OLED panels provide some big advantages over the LED panels Apple currently uses: OLED screens are more flexible, lighter and thinner.
Apple embracing OLED screens for iPhone?
“Apple plans to introduce OLED panels to all iPhone models by 2019. This year’s introduction accounted for only 40%, but next year it is expected to double to 80% and 100% next year,” reports The Bell.
The report also claims Apple’s suppliers are investing tens of millions on the ability to print flexible circuit boards. Both Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Interflex are planning to expand production capabilities to keep up with future supply demands.
Apple’s first OLED-equipped iPhone is expected to have a curved display. Other features may include wireless charging, a bigger screen with slimmer bezels, improved cameras, retina scanning and Touch ID built into the display.
