Apple quietly rolls out AirPods update

Apple is quietly rolling out a new AirPods firmware update with version number 3.5.1. The update is installed automatically when AirPods are in their charging case and connected to an iOS device.

It’s not yet clear what this update does because Apple is yet to provide AirPods users with any release notes. In fact, you probably won’t even notice it has been installed unless you check your AirPods’ firmware version number in the Settings app.

However, it’s thought the update could address some of the complaints raised by users over unreliable Bluetooth connectivity — particularly when connected to an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus — and battery drain when the AirPods are stored in the charging case.

Teething troubles aside, AirPods have been incredibly well received by critics and early adopters since making their debut. They are praised not only for their sound quality, but also the new W1 chip, which makes pairing super-simple and provides better connectivity (most of the time).

You can check the firmware version of your AirPods by opening the Settings app, tapping General, then About, then AirPods. If you’re yet to receive version 3.5.1, ensure your AirPods are in the charging case and connected to an iOS device over Bluetooth.

You have to either have the AirPods in your ears or in the case with the lid flipped open and then you’ll see AirPods toward the bottom

An update software will have that option “not yet “

Had AirPods for 3 days. It was horrible.

Well, quietly is the right word for it then. I haven’t seen any update, but wasn’t complaining in the first place. I just adore these little gems! They just work! Last Sunday I went for a run, and took them along with just the Apple Watch Series 2 at my wrist, and the Airpods were my music companions. Switching to these things on any Apple device is soooo simple. I have them always in my pocket, in case I like to listen some music.

Eh, get back to me when I can actually go into an Apple Store, Best Buy, pretty much ANYWHERE, and buy a pair of these things. Apple might as well be selling them via 1-day popup vending machines like Snapchat does their Specs, but I really don’t think Apple can make enough of them to do that either. I stopped checking iStockNow on Erfon’s recommendation after seeing no indication of real availability for weeks. These things are reaching vaporware status now.

I have had mine for about 3 weeks now and the update improved the connectivity issues and the battery issues I was having with them. They sat in their case all weekend without being touched and I looked this morning and was impressed to see them at 100% and the case at 84%. Before, the case would have been at 0% and the AirPods potentially drained as well. Looks like they worked the kinks out.
