Looking to save yourself some cash on Apple’s new MacBook Pro? You could be in luck. The company is teasing a one-day shopping event for Black Friday that could bring tasty discounts on its latest products.

Apple chose not to participate in Black Friday sales last year, so fans were forced to look elsewhere for price cuts on Apple products. But that may not be the case later this week.

[contextly_auto_sidebar] We don’t yet know which products Apple will include in its sale, but the company is definitely holding one. It has posted a teaser on its website that tells fans to “come back this Friday to check everyone off your list.”

Don’t get too excited just yet, though. In 2014, Apple took a different approach to Black Friday, offering free gift cards with certain purchases instead of cutting prices. Customers got up to $150 for buying a Mac, up to $75 with an iPad, and up to $50 with an iPod.

But the best discounts were never offered by Apple anyway. Third-party retailers are typically more willing to slash prices on Apple goods, and their discounts are almost always more generous — especially if you’re willing to buy older devices.

It will definitely be worth paying the Apple store a visit this Friday to see what’s on offer, though. It’s also worth remembering that over the holiday period, the company offers free two-day shipping on almost all online purchases, while its retail stores are open longer.

Lots of those 3rd party retailers rely on gift cards, too! That’s happening again this year. They are something of a trap– unless you are already going to be buying something else, you may lose track of them, get stuck having to buy something at a store you may not usually shop at, or end up buying something you don’t really need. That $150 or $250 gift card is no longer such a deal.

Worst case scenario, you need to return the deal product, you can be stuck paying for the gift card! Or, rather, getting a refund for the price minus the gift card cost. In other words, you’ve just paid for a gift card, you really didn’t need!

So, avoid any deals with gift cards– go only for the ones with actual cash discounts at the register!
