Breaking the screen on your next iPhone is going to be a little bit harder, if Apple goes with the next version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass.
The company debuted Gorilla Glass 5 today that is destined to arrive on smartphones later this year, offering better durability than any other version when its dropped from 5 feet or lower.
Corning’s early lab tests showed that Gorilla Glass 5 survives drops onto rough surfaces up to four times better than its competitors. When dropped from 1.6 meters, the glass comes away crack-free 80 percent of the time. Great news if you rarely drop your iPhone, but not all that impressive if you’re a clumsy oaf like me.

Apple has used Gorilla Glass in many of its iPhone and iPad devices, making the company’s latest iteration a likely candidate for the iPhone 7 and iPhone Plus, though there haven’t been any tell-tale signs that it will definitely happen.
The iPhone 7 is expected to be revealed in September with a simplified case design, improved camera, redesigned home button, A10 processor and more.

They say this every year but I always find myself having to need to buy a screen protector. My iPhone 6’s display got scratched quite quickly after purchase and so was my 6s which I used without a screen protector in the first 5 days as I didn’t find a tempered glass screen protector (the only screen protectors I really like).
I will only again use my iPhones and iPads without screen protectors when Apple uses sapphire.

I’ve owned the original iPhone (2008), the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 6 and have never used a screen protector. None of my screens have ever gotten scratched, and I use them every day. My phone is always in my right front pocket by itself, and I don’t put keys, coins or anything else that is metallic in that pocket to tempt fate.
