iPad display’s LED + IPS = very wide viewing angles

One little details Apple just mentioned at the iPad Media Event is the technology they are using in the display.

Viewing angle on a lap based media device like this is an issue, obviously… for example, if you have a loved one watching a movie next to you on your iPad when on the couch.

Apple just announced that while their display is LED (and not OLED, which makes sense — for $499, that price is just a pipe dream, given the price of OLED panels right now) they use IPS technology to maximize viewing angle.

That stands for in-plane switching. Here’s the Wikipedia article about how it all works. But it’s a good thing.

Although the iPad is clearly aimed at taking down netbooks and e-readers, make no mistake: it’s also taking a secondary aim at your television.

Now let’s just see an iTunes movie store revamp to capitalize on the off-angle viewing excellence of the LED + IPS display.

Nearly all the manufacturers are using IPS, Apple was using worse TN technology when everybody else was using IPS (for example Iphone 3GS etc.), now they advertise it like they are the only ones using it. What a great brainwashing technique :) Now, they wouldnt use OLED displays. Apple uses the cheapest possible components in their devices…

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. IPS screens cost more and OLED screens are ridiculously expensive. Unless you want a tablet that costs $1500 or $2500 just so you can have a 10″ OLED. Moron.

IPS costs more than what? TN displays? I agree that I have no idea why I even mentioned OLED. But advertising LED+IPS equal to wide viewing angles is very misleading for the customer. Wider than what? competitors products? but almost all were already using IPS screens… So, apple was just making a fuss about some improvement in their products but they advertised it like it makes it better than everything else, which is misleading… All apple says is better, easier, etc. but without giving any explanation on compared to what…
