With every new OS X release comes a fancy new wallpaper, and for Mavericks, Apple has provided us with a beautiful shot of an ocean wave. And it’s even more beautiful when you put it on a high-resolution display, because it was a whopping 5120×2880 resolution. In fact, it’s the perfect size for a 27-inch Retina iMac or Thunderbolt display.
The Mavericks wallpaper is twice the size of Apple’s current 27-inch display, which offer a 2560×1440 resolution. And we know that when Apple produces Retina displays it always doubles the resolution. Naturally, then, this wallpaper has sparked speculation that the Cupertino company is preparing for future Retina iMacs and Thunderbolt displays.
Mavericks already supports 4K monitors — three at once, in fact — so it would make sense for Apple to also supply the hardware to go along with it. And a 5120×2880 display would more than accommodate the 4K content that will begin replacing 1080p over the next few years.
This doesn’t mean Retina iMacs and Thunderbolt displays are imminent, of course, but if Apple’s preparing for them in Maverick, it suggests they’re not too far away.

super retina display?
In fact, it’s 1x the size, 2x the resolution and 4x the pixel count.
Why, when you scroll over anything underlined twice, it pulls up an ad for a Microsoft Surface. Kinda counterproductive, don’t you think??
