Craig Ferenghi just gave us a demo of iOS 7. Here’s what is new about the look and design ethos of iOS 7.

• iOS 7 Parallax Motion — the background of the screen actually shifts with the accelerometer.

• The Weather app — you can now tap for more info, weather is animated with backgrounds, à la Yahoo’s Weather App but without Flickr Information. Pinch and you get an overview of all your weather zones.

• The Calendar is so clean, so flat. It looks beautiful: definitely inspired by some of the flatter calendar apps.

• iMessages has also been extremely streamlined. There’s a new gesture from the left-end to go back or forth between individual messages.

• Folders now have multiple pages!

• Game Center no longer has any green felt. It’s a much more attractive app.

• The Mail.app is redesigned, with much cleaner type. And you can use the same gesture as in iMessages to slide back and forth. There’s Mailbox app like action to swipe and organize mail from the main menu screen.

• There’s also a much flatter Notification Center. And it’s now available from the lock screen as well.

There’s a lot more here, but this is what Apple is showing off right now. Look for our in-depth preview later this afternoon.

I am so mad. I fucking hate this. iOS 7 looks like complete shit. Welcome to Android on the iPhone.

I understand your frustration, but complaining that iOS 7 is like Android on the iPhone hurts because Android is what iOS wants to be when it grows up. At least Android is updated with awesome new features, and not slowly ripping off 4 year old features. All I see out of iOS is older phones not getting the features, which is fragmentation. That’s the slide Tim should have showed. How many missing features of iOS 7 in iPhone 4/4S

The reason why I disagreed with your reply @nvettese is because you forgot to point out that iOS 7 and it’s features will indeed be coming to “iPhone 4 and later” as Mr. Cook pointed out.

While that is true, what functionality will be left off the older devices? What software version only tells part of the story of fragmentation. No point of getting a new upgrade if you can’t get the full experience. Does anyone remember the feature “fragmentation” of iOS6. Yes, it is the same difference.

Looks like a worthwhile improvement. Well done Jonny !

I have to disagree completely. Aesthetically, iOS 7 is nothing short of a disaster. And Calendar may be the worst app of the lot. I’m no designer, and I could have designed that icon in 2 minutes. The app itself is a boring, thin, ugly font on a white background — which seems to be the design aesthetic of the whole OS. I’m astonished that under Ive’s hands Apple has let this abomination be released on the world. OS look and feel used to be a distinguishing mark of Apple. This marks the end of an era.
