Ask iFixIt: the thinner Apple makes their products, the less user serviceable they are. That’s why the new 21.5-inch iMac doesn’t allow users to upgrade the RAM themselves. The 27-inch, though, apparently does, a consequence of the added space.

That really sucks! Ram gets really cheap about a year after initial release. That’s when it makes sense to upgrade with 3rd party RAM. Now you are forced to pay Apple’s outrageous RAM prices.
The 27″ will be cheaper than the 21″ if you want 32GB of RAM in it.
$500 for the bigger computer and $200 for the RAM. I bet Apple gets more than $700 for 32 GB of RAM.
It’s also possible that these will accept 64GB of RAM – too expensive now, but in a couple of years, I’d want the ability to do that.
