Most analysts have seemed to agree that Apple’s new Apple TV set, dubbed the “iTV,” is going to launch sometime during 2012. However, Asian research group CLSA has released a note today saying that Apple won’t release the product until 2013, with Sharp providing the display panels.
The new iTV is said to be the next “big thing” after Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacon that he had “cracked” the new TV set. Apple is said to be partnering with various networks for streaming, hopefully to someday do away with cable providers entirely. The new product should disrupt the industry, much like the iPhone did in 2007.
The Research Group goes on to note that the parent company of Foxconn’s decision to buy stake into Sharp, indicates that Sharp will be providing the panels for the Apple TV. Apple is said to have also invested roughly $1.3 billion into Sharp factories to get a new product rolling.
A 2013 release does make sense considering Apple just released a third-generation of their $99 Apple TV set-top box earlier this month. Would Apple really release a new a product, even if it is only $99, only to be ousted a few months later?
While supply is certainly an issue, the big thing for Apple is going to be getting the necessary content partners lined up. Sure, content like Netflix, Hulu and MLB is great, but it would be even better if Apple could line up networks like NBC, Fox and CBS.

Im really excited about this one. mostly because I don’t know what to expect, other than siri playing a role.
I just really hope they go higher than a 1080p display. a retina display will probably come out for the 2nd or more than likely 3rd generation. like they did with the iPad.
I would have thought that the idea of Apple making a TV is stupid, but I’ve learned my lesson.
I thought that an iMac without a floppy was stupid. I was wrong.
I thought that Apple making an MP3 player was idiotic. I was wrong.
I thought that Apple making a phone was ridiculous. I was wrong.
When the iPad was rumored, I’d learned my lesson and just shut up to see what Apple would pull out of their hat. I was impressed.
So while I can’t imagine what kind of innovation Apple will come up with for a TV, I’ve learned to sit back and just wait to see what they can come up with.
