Apple’s iPhone 4 could soon be the most popular camera used to upload photos to Flickr, overtaking the Nikon D90 DSLR. The iPhone still has a little way to go before it reaches the top spot, but if the current trend continues it will overtake the D90 in around one month.
Although the iPhone 4 only launched just under a year ago, it is considerably less expensive than the Nikon D90 – which has been on the market for around three years and costs over a thousand dollars. Its smaller form factor, and the fact that everyone carries their iPhone everywhere, is believed to be one of the reasons why the device is proving to be more popular than a traditional camera.
The iPhone 4 does steal the top spot when it comes to the most popular camera phone, with its 3G and 3GS siblings taking the second and third spots respectively. The HTC Evo 4G is in fourth, while the HTC Droid Incredible is in fifth when it comes to the Flickr community.

As iPhone cameras continue to improve with each generation, it seems casual snappers are choosing to leave their digital cameras and home and use their iPhones when they’re out and about. Could there be a point when smartphone cameras are so good that they eradicate the need for a regular point and shoot?

I believe that for casual users the answer would be a very big yes.
Having to choose between carrying a smartphone w great camera, or a regular bulky point and shoot, I would rather choose my smartphone!
But professionals will still stick to their regulars to get the job done.
P.S.
grammatical error: “…digital cameras and home and use…”, it should be “at home”
Well, the issue isn’t always the megapixels, is it? I mean part of the iphone camera’s charm is the not-great lens, isn’t? I guess with enough megapixels, digital zoom would really work.
That said, I hope the iPhone camera never gets too good!
It’s not surprising to me the iPhone 4 is the most popular camera phone.
I have shown my iPhone photos to photo aficionados, and they’re really impressed with the iPhone’s photo quality.
To that, two of my friends have the Evo, and we’ve done side-by-side comparisons, taking the same shot, and even though the Evo has more megapixels, the iPhone takes better photos.
