The crime drama Presumed Innocent is a big enough hit that Apple TV+ committed to season two before the initial season is even over.

The series starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been among the most watched shows on streaming since launching in mid-June, according to analysts.

Presumed Innocent renewed for season 2

Although Apple TV+ is one of the smaller streaming services, it’s growing in popularity mostly because of a string of series that have drawn big audiences. The recently concluded Dark Matter was a hit, and millions of fans are eagerly waiting the second seasons of Severance and Silo.

And now Presumed Innocent is drawing a large enough crowd that season two is on the way. Apple TV+ committed late Friday to a “second season that will unfold around a suspenseful, brand-new case,” though it said nothing more about the plot.

Jake Gyllenhaal will return, and Scott Turow, who wrote the novel the first season is based on, will also be involved. Legendary producers David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams will be back for season two as well.

The crime drama is a hit

Apple TV+ describes Presumed Innocent as a “global hit series” but we don’t have to take their word for it.

The crime drama ranks at No. 2 on Reelgood’s list of Top 10 TV shows on streaming during the week ending July 10. And it’s at No. 3 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming shows for the week ending July 7. It’s been at or near the top of these charts since the debut on June 12.

Estimates from companies like JustWatch and Reelgood are necessary because streaming services rarely reveal how many people tune in to their offerings.

More about Presumed Innocent

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a lawyer in love in Presumed Innocent. And it looks like he might just be a murderer, too. The eight-episode limited series answers that question.

If its ongoing popularity catches your eye, and the commitment to season two, Apple’s teaser says:

“The gripping series takes viewers on a journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.”

Six episodes of Presumed Innocent are available now. The seventh will reach Apple’s streaming service on Wednesday, with a new one following each week through July 24. There’ll be eight episodes in total.
