Season two of hit multilingual wine-tasting drama Drops of God is headed your way on Apple TV+, Apple said Tuesday. It acquired streaming rights to it much like it did with season one of the international production.
Fans of the show appreciate its adaptation from the New York Times bestselling Japanese manga series of the same name. The award-winning Tadashi Agi created and wrote it, and Shu Okimoto illustrated it.
Wine-soaked drama Drops of God season 2 remembers where it lives: Apple TV+
Like the proud owner of rarefied wine cellar (but for TV shows), Apple TV+ said Tuesday it acquired season two of hit multilingual French-Japanese drama Drops of God.
The first season, starring Fleur Geffrier (Das Boot, Elle) as Camille Léger and Tomohisa Yamashita (The Head, Tokyo Vice) as Issei Tomine, made world-class wine tasting surprisingly accessible.
Top ratings for season 1
As such, the show did well critics and regular viewers alike. It even bagged a 100% Certified Fresh critics’ score on Rottentomatoes.com (viewer score: a fine 93%). Apple included the following quotes from unspecified sources in its press release: “unusual, stylish, hugely entertaining drama,” “hidden gem,” “taut, elegant, flat-out fun series,” “shockingly mesmerizing” and a “thrill to watch.”
I watched the first season and liked it, but I might tone that praise down just a bit. It certainly featured a cool story from Agi’s manga. In it, legendary winemaker Alexandre Léger leaves the world’s most-valuable wine collection to whomever can win a lengthy and surprisingly brutal wine-tasting competition: his estranged daughter or a brilliant young Japanese expert. Cult of Mac‘s reviewer loved the show and even interviewed Geffrier about it.
Here’s the streamer’s description of season 2:
In season two of Drops of God, Camille (Geffrier) and Issei (Yamashita) once again face a nearly impossible challenge. To uncover the origin of the world’s most wonderful wine, a secret that even Alexandre Léger failed to unlock. Through a series of trials and tests, their quest will take them to far-flung corners of the globe. [And it forces] them to face their inner demons and changes them forever.
Drops of God season two will be directed by Oded Ruskin (No Man’s Land, Absentia), who also directed the first season. Season one was created by Quoc Dang Tran (Marianne, Parallels) and produced by Klaus Zimmermann (Trapped). Drops of God season two will premiere on Apple TV+, excluding Japan.
Les Productions Dynamic produces the series in association with 22H22 and Adline Entertainment for Legendary Entertainment.
