Apple TV+ committed to a second season of The Last Thing He Told Me, a thriller that aired in 2023. Jennifer Garner will continue in the starring role.

Season one of the drama is based on a novel of the same name by Laura Dave. Season two will be an adaptation of the forthcoming second book in the series.

The Last Thing He Told Me continues on Apple TV+ with season 2

“Like so many people, I fell for Hannah on page one of Laura Dave’s gripping novel. The move to actor and producer from reader and super fan was delicious,” said Garner in a statement Monday. “I’m thrilled to get to tell more of Hannah’s story — I couldn’t have said yes more quickly to season two! These characters and their story mean so much to me, as I know they do to the many who have championed our show; we’re excited to give audiences even more with this next chapter.”

Garner previously called the part a “dream role.”

Apple’s summary of season one of The Last Thing He Told Me says:

“The series follows Hannah (Garner), a woman who must forge a relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) in order to find the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared.”

As for season two, there’s not much that can be said without massive spoilers for season one. We at least know that, in addition to Garner and Angourie Rice, also reprising their roles in season two will Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and David Morse.

A bit of a surprise

Apple TV+ making a season two renewal for The Last Thing He Told Me wasn’t an obvious move. For one thing, the streaming service called the show a limited series from the beginning. Those are stories that aren’t meant to be renewed.

Also, critics were not thrilled. Season one earned a meager 42% approval rating on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

That said, critics strongly praised Garner’s work on the show. One critic said, “The show is full of heart, largely because of Jennifer Garner’s naturally gentle nature.” The actor rose to stardom in the early 2000s with Alias. She’s worked steadily since then.

Many reviewers panned the script and production, though. Still, the novel was a No. New York Times bestseller, so there’s a lot of potential.

The Last Thing He Told Me season 2 is not coming soon to Apple TV+

There’ll be plenty of time to work on the script and perhaps find a better director before the premiere of The Last Thing He Told Me season two.

Laura Dave is still writing the sequel novel, and it’s not scheduled for release until 2025. The next season of the Apple TV+ series arrives after that.

Watch on Apple TV

Fans of Jennifer Garner can watch the first season now on Apple TV+. That requires a subscription to the streaming service, of course. That is $9.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.
