CoM Reader Gets A Peek Inside London Apple Store’s Secret iPad 2 Briefing

Last night, Apple held secret meetings with Apple Store retail staff around the world, most likely to brief employees on what to expect when the iPad 2 debuts on Wednesday. But what actually happens at those meetings? Silenced by NDAs, the employees can’t say… but that didn’t stop one of our readers from peeking through the keyhole.

His account of what he saw of the secret meeting at London’s Convent Garden Apple Store, after the jump.

CoM reader R.H. writes:

I suddenly remembered this blog post when walking past London’s Covent Garden Apple Store at around 9 pm last night (Sunday).

The place was packed with Apple employees all being Keynote briefed in front of a large screen by a gent with a microphone. They were talking about the secret ‘thing’ but holding a secret meeting in a giant open-plan building with no shutters on the windows is not ideal – so large black curtains had been strung between the interior pillars to screen off the secret things.

Except the curtains didn’t close all the gaps so you could almost – but not quite – read the bullets points on the screen. It was quite funny watching the staff freak out when they realised people outside were peering in at the secret thing. The kept trying to close the gaps in the curtains, and never quite succeeded.

If anyone had had a proper camera with a slightly long lens – or a modest pair of binoculars – they’d have been able to read the whole thing…

No concrete details, which is disappointing, although the fact that Apple scheduled a secret meeting in London at least implies a simultaneous US/UK iPad 2 launch.

Next time Apple throws a press event, though, we hope one of our readers will camp outside the Covent Garden Apple Store with that pair of binoculars, and maybe a long-lens digicam. Anyone care to volunteer?

This is not an article. There is no information in it.

  2. KenFromEmpowerMac says:

The meeting was regarding Apple to unveil Joint Venture, a small business repair service.
    This was news last night.
Now that Google has sent COM down the search results, there is no reason to put “iPad2” in a story that had nothing to do with the iPad to boost reader views.
At least read other blogs before you post stories that are factually wrong.

The meeting last night was about JointVenture.

Another great John Brownlee article …. Why did you even bother to post this ?

I can wait a couple of more days to find out what was happening. Why is it so essential to get partial and unsubstantiated information sooner. I honestly don’t get this early scoop stuff, but then again, I’m not a blogger looking for hits. If the briefing was supposed to be in secret, does that mean everyone should know about it?

On that same day( Feb.23rd) Apple Japan had a big meeting on their Ginza Store’s 5th floor. The day before some goons from security came by to interview over worked staff even in their break room and it ended up by some schmucks being ordered to clean the joint all night …
Some big ass Marketing rat from abroad, led the meeting where anybody worth their salt in Apple stores around Japan was made to assist .
Most of small time staff weren’t told what it was all about . Meanwhile a white big car was parked by Apple store with it’s engine running and the driver picking his nose most of the day .
So much for hush hush crap.

  12. Miyabi says:

The meetings weren’t about the iPad 2.
If anyone in Canada walked by a store in the malls, it was obviously about a new service that’s coming soon.

There weren’t even any examples or hints of a new iPad on the screen.
If there was, wouldn’t it have been like the new MacBook Pros that were already in the stores days before they were sold? Wouldn’t they have the new iPad 2 to be able to be breifed on?

Apple never releases new product to employees to view and know before they sell it, so why start now?

Priceless. Don’t know why this comment is not the top comment ;)
    Thanks for making my day!

  14. Title should read: “CoM user peeks into Apple store meeting and reports ‘no concrete details’ but verifies that there *was* a meeting taking place.”

1 minute of my life… Wasted. Bravo, CoM!

This is a growing problem, not just for COM but for all of those “news” sites. A COM headline today was “Suspected iPad Hacker Released on Bail” when anyone who writes for COM should know the difference between hacking into iPads and hacking into a public web server and gleaning information from it. Leaves me to believe the headline was for aggregation and attention only and certainly not real news.

  17. Johnstupid2 says:

    didn’t I said it already!

John Brownlee and CoM reader can go an F themselves…
