Beeper Mini will soon require you to have access to a Mac for using iMessage on Android. Or you will have to use your friend’s Mac to set up Beeper Cloud.

Beeper’s latest workaround comes after Apple’s crackdown. The service has experienced multiple outages this week, with the company claiming its latest fix will address them and deliver a reliable experience.

Beeper Mini now requires a Mac to work

Beeper launched with much fanfare at the beginning of this month. The team behind the app had reverse-engineered iMessage to turn green bubbles from Android users into blue.

However, the media limelight brought the app to Apple’s attention. The Cupertino giant has since then taken steps to block Beeper Cloud and Mini, citing security and privacy concerns. This has led Beeper to suffer from multiple outages over the last few weeks.

In a Reddit post, the Beeper team says they have “found a solution to stabilize the iMessage situation for Beeper Cloud and Mini.” The catch? It requires access to a Mac. Why the change suddenly? Thanks to Apple.

Beeper has been using its own fleet of Mac servers to send identification information to Apple. “Unfortunately, this has proven to be an easy target for Apple because thousands of Beeper users were using the same registration data,” says the Beeper team.

This change will be implemented with a Beeper update rolling out starting December 20. The new version of Beeper Cloud for Mac will generate registration data that is unique to you.

Apple will crackdown on Beeper’s latest workaround sooner than later

If you have been using Beeper to enjoy iMessage on Android, the requirement of owning a Mac is certainly a bummer. On the positive side, Beeper says this change makes the connection “very reliable” in their test.

While Beeper is optimistic that its latest workaround will provide a stable experience, the improvement might not last long. Apple will likely flex its iron grip on iMessage again to prevent Beeper’s unauthorized access to its messaging service.
