The wait goes on for two features that Apple promised to add to iOS 17. The iPhone-maker committed itself to collaborative music playlists and AirPlay in hotel rooms but now says these won’t be available before 2024.

These are the last significant additions expected for iOS 17.

Some iOS 17 features rolled out over time

At WWDC23 back in June, Apple first laid out the feature set for iOS 17 and its other operating systems. But not everything Tim Cook and Co. described was intended for simultaneous release. The OS was scheduled to launch in early fall but Apple said at its developers conference that some features would appear later.

iOS 17.1 brought AirDrop file transfers over the internet. The just-launched iOS 17.2 includes Apple’s new Journal app and other promised improvements like enhanced AutoFill for PDFs.

But Apple now says that iPhone users will have to wait a bit more for two additional promised features.

Collaborative playlists and AirPlay in hotel rooms are still coming

iOS 17 developers are still working on the ability for users to collaborate on music playlists. The feature will let users invite friends to join a playlist, and everyone can add, reorder and remove songs. Plus, they’ll be able to use emoji to react to the song choices in Now Playing.

This is a hotly anticipated addition, but the official list of iOS 17 features says it is “coming in an update in 2024.” It was tested this autumn in iOS 17.2 betas but didn’t make the final version.

AirPlay in a hotel room is also still in the development phase. This will let users scan a QR code on a room TV and securely share videos, photos, and music from an iPhone to the TV. This is listed by Apple as “coming in an update in 2024,” too.

Whether the two additional features will be part of iOS 17.3 or iOS 17.4 or even a later version is unknown at this time.
