The Qualcomm X75 modem unveiled in February will be part of the iPhone 16 Pro models when they launch in 2024, according to an industry analyst. It’s the first from the modem-maker to support the speedy 5G Advanced standard.
But the cutting-edge chip supposedly won’t be included in Apple’s more affordable non-Pro handsets.
Apple and Qualcomm continue to cooperate
Apple and Qualcomm have a rocky relationship, and even battled in court. Nevertheless, every iOS handset has a Qualcomm modem inside. The new iPhone 15 series uses the chip-maker’s X70.
So Jeff Pu, an analyst with Haitong International Securities, didn’t exactly go out on a limb this week when he predicted in a research note (via MacRumors) that the next-generation X75 would go into the iPhone 16 next year. Especially as we know that Apple will continue to buy Qualcomm 5G modems through 2026.
But it is somewhat surprising that the analyst says the newer chip will only be in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max — the two non-Pro models will allegedly stick with the X70.
The move is not too surprising as this is in-line with Apple’s policy of finding a range of ways to separate its more expensive from its more affordable handsets. The differences have never extended to modems before, however.
5G Advanced almost certainly in the iPhone 16 Pro
Qualcomm took the wraps off the X75 in February 2023. Its highlight is support for 5G Advanced, a standard that will give a speed boost to cellular-wireless networks and make mobile VR/AR more practical.
The iPhone 16 won’t fall behind by waiting until 2024 for the modem. The full standard hasn’t even been approved yet.
