The third season of the Apple TV+ dark comedy Physical will feature a psychological battle between Rose Byrne‘s Sheila and a new rival for premier fitness entrepreneur status played by Zooey Deschanel. The first trailer for the upcoming season gives a first look at their struggle.

In addition, Apple’s streaming service revealed Wednesday that the series will return in early August -0- and that this will be the final season of Physical.

Physical season 3 will be a struggle to be top fitness maven

Physical stars Rose Byrne as Sheila Rubin, a fitness instructor building an exercise empire. In the preceding two seasons, she escaped her awful husband and made real progress toward her goal.

Some questions arose about the show’s future after a shaky first season. However, season two proved so enjoyable that Apple greenlit a third one.

As the upcoming episodes begin, Sheila has found confidence and inner strength through her work as a teacher and entrepreneur. But her status will be challenged by rising celebrity exercise goddess Kelly Kilmartin (played by New Girl star Zooey Deschanel), who becomes not only a professional threat but also manages to get inside Sheila’s head.

Enjoying all three seasons comes with a $6.99-per-month subscription to Apple’s streaming video service. An Apple device is not necessary — the service only requires the Apple TV app which is available on a wide variety of devices, including Windows, Roku and Amazon Fire.

Forget season one

After the first season in 2021, there were plenty who questioned whether Physical would go on. Critics weren’t pleased, and the initial 10 episodes earned a mere 65% approval rating on review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

But season two, which premiered in 2022, changed everything. It won over the critics and earned a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Physical seasons one and two are available now on Apple TV+. (IndieWire suggests you skip the first season and start with the sophomore one.)
